Travel at 26 weeks?

A dear friend of mine is getting married in another state next month. It's a 6-7 hour drive so we would be spending the night away from home.

Is it unwise to travel this late? I meant to ask my doctor and forgot, but the nurse practitioner was a bit gloom and doom about it. :-/ But she also looked askance at me when I said I drank coffee every morning so ... I'm not sure if she wasn't just being a bit gloom and doom about everything. :) I would be very sad to miss this wedding but if it's not safe then of course I want what's best for the babies!

Re: Travel at 26 weeks?

  • I would check with your doctor for a definite answer but FWIW, I got back from a vaca where I was 25.3 to 26.3w last Saturday. My pregnancy has been relatively "normal" thus far...no out of the ordinary complaints. We stopped a few extra times so that I could stand and stretch and use the restroom. I was fine for the week so I would imagine you would be okay for an overnight trip. That being said...now that Im 27.3w, my OB doesnt want me to travel. He doesnt want me to travel now because Im in the 3rd tri and at this point, anything can happen. Im sure you will be fine but just call to double check with the doctor.

  • I would ask your doctor. I was first told not after 24 wks. But since my pregnancy is going so well my doc changed my dead line to 32 wks. I was told that after every hour of travel you have to get out and walk around for at least ten minutes to keep circulation going. I hope you get to go.
  • I would just want the OK from the doctor beforehand. Probably have an appointment the day before, just to be extra safe. Also, I think you are fine with your one cup of coffee a day. :)

  • I was not allowed to travel without a cervix scan one week before my trip. After 23.5 weeks, my OB didn't want me any further than an hour from a high level NICU. He told me to not even bother asking my MFM, as he was certain she'd say no travel at all.

I'd definitely check with your doctor. An appointment right before the trip would probably be an excellent idea as well.

  • My dr said car travel was fine, but to call my insurance to be sure of their regulations. They may not pay out of network after a certain number of weeks. Dr. also warned that if I did go into labor early that I would be stuck there until baby was released. This was with DS. As of now, not planning any travel with the twins.
  • It all depends on your circumstances. Unfortunately, my father was diagnosed with bad cancer when I was about 29 weeks, and I had no issues flying back three times, ending with his funeral and flying home at 37 weeks. I have had no complications or anything, and my doctor was fine with it. We would not have driven the 20ish hours because we would have been very far from hospitals. If you have had no complications and aren't going somewhere super podunk, just see if you and your doctor are comfortable with it.
  • Also, we were well aware of the possibility of going into labor while we were there and just resigned ourselves to it (took medical records and some baby clothes). I had to be there and would have regretted it forever if I hadn't gone.

I traveled 8 hours by car last weekend at 25 weeks. Saw the Dr the day before and all looked okay. It wasn't bad for me, just stopped a lot.

  • My doctor told me I am fine to travel up to 30 weeks barring "something happening" - meaning if I go for my 27 week check up and there is some type of complication, I would have to cancel.

I am planning on taking a 2 week vacation to Greece on 24 weeks.  I wouldn't worry at all about a one-night trip a car ride away.
