Maternity Leave

What are your plans for maternity leave?

I really wish I could take 12 weeks, but I don't think it's in the financial cards, so I told my boss yesterday I want to take 6 weeks leave (that's what my STD will cover), then 6 weeks half days. This way I can transition back, not be rushed in the mornings while we're getting used to packing up baby for care, and my mom has agreed to watch LO during this time, so we avoid paying daycare for a little while longer. I couldn't really read his expression when I said this, but he didn't object. I think this is a good middle ground and hopefully the bosses will be on board.

Re: Maternity Leave

  • I feel very fortunate that I'll be taking 6 months off.

  • Did you tell him or ask him? That might explain his strange reaction.

ETA: I will probably take 4ish weeks off. I teach dance in the evenings part time. My mother will be watching the baby for the 2-3 hours between when I start work and my husband ends. If I need more recovery time, I will take it. I have a flexible work situation. I just get subs for classes when I need them.

  • I would love to take the full 12, but I doubt it will happen. I was on bedrest for the last two months with DS so I probably will only get what I need medically to be cleared.

Something in between? I said simply that I would like to do 6 full and 6 half instead of taking the full 12 [that our policy provides]. Then I just kept blabbering and said "but we can talk about that more when you have time". I'm sure I just didn't give him time to react. There's only been one person at this company have a baby and she took the full leave, so I know it's not an option that's been thrown out before.

  • Not sure if you were looking for suggestions or not but personally I'd try to take a full 8 weeks and then 4 weeks of half days.
With my first I took 10 full weeks and then did 2 weeks of half days. I really liked doing the half days but I wouldn't have wanted to do them for any longer than 2 weeks. By that point I kind of just wanted things to be "normal" so that I could start a real routine.

This time I plan to take the full 12 weeks. I think maybe one week of that will be unpaid.

  • I am a teacher and am hoping that my H and I can save enough for me to just take off the second half of the year off using a leave of absence.  If that doesn't work, I will take 8 weeks like I did with DS.

  • Depending on the amount of vacation, etc. I accrue between now and then, I'll be off for 8-12 weeks.  My STD allows 8 weeks because I'll be have a reoccurring c-section.

  • I will for sure take the full 16 weeks FMLA but who knows if I will need to use time before delivery.  I have not told my boss I'm expecting yet but I plan on asking for a total of 6 months off.  I will negotiate down to being off 4 months then part-time for two months then full time after that.  We'll see what she says!

  • I will be back at work one week after delivery. Not as crazy as it sounds : there is one class I can't give up so I have to come in to teach it twice a week for about 5 hours. I will do that for 3 to 6 weeks depending on when the baby shows up and then will be on mostly mat leave for about two months with about 10 hours of working from home a week.

Eta: with ds1 and ds2 i took 6 weeks plus thhen worked part time from home for about 4 weeks with childcare and it was great.

  • I know I will get at least 8 weeks due to C-section and then if I am still with the same job I will go back to work only a few days a week for minimal hours......of course that all depends on the childcare situation at the time.

  • This seems so crazy to me - in Canada you get a full year with 60% of your pay (your company may top it up to the full 100% depending on your employer). For my first I took the full year. Bonus, I still accrued vacation over the year so I got to tack an extra 3 weeks on the end.

  • I will be taking one year of maternity leave. Hopefully, I can time the next pregnancy to where I can take a total of 2.5 years off.

  • I will be taking 3 or 4 months then going back part time for 2 or 3 days a week. Hubby and I both want me to stay home full time but student loans don't allow that quite yet.

That is crazy about Canada! If I had stayed full time at my job I could take up to 12 weeks however it was all unpaid!
  • 5-6 months this time.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • Considering that I JUST took a 12 week maternity leave 6 months ago, I really won't have much time saved before this baby comes.  I'll probably take 8 weeks of leave (all paid with saved sick/personal/vacation time) and then take 4 weeks as work from home. My work is really awesome and would allow me to do that.

  • I'm starting a new teaching job in a new district since my last school closed down. I will have no sick time accrued and can't afford much time, so probably 8 weeks.

  • I am taking the full 12 weeks under FMLA.  The majority of it will be unpaid because STD will only be for 6 weeks and is only about 1/4 of my actual pay and I don't have much time accrued at this point.
  • Another Canadian here and I felt so lucky last time to have so much time off compared to all my other bumpies.

This time I am self employed providing a home daycare so ill be taking 2 weeks off and jumping back in. The plan had been for DH to take 4 months parental leave. Here the mom and dad can split 35 weeks i think it is of parental leave. His work tops him up to almost full pay so it would be no different than if he was working. He starts a new job in two weeks though and were not sure if he will be able to take off the full 4 months as planned so we'll have to play it by ear. He might do his vacation time right after the baby and save parental leave for the summer months.

  • I will be out 6-8 weeks bc that is what STD covers. We are a needed two income household so I will not be able to take anymore than that. I am a manager at a bank so It will be right back to full time for me :(

I will be taking 6 months total off. Probably 3 weeks prior planned csection and the rest after, unless something happens I need to take more off before for medical reasons.

Gotcha. Out of curiosity, was there a temp or any type of replacement while your co-worker was out?

  • I'll be taking six and maybe working some from home part of that. I'm not sure my boss will let me take more. Our company doesn't fall under FMLA though and my STD will only cover 68. Plus I can only roll over one week of vaca at the beginning of the year so I'll only have one week of paid leave.

  • I am going to take 6-8 weeks depending on type of the delivery. Our company policy doesn't allow, at least not out right, 6 full weeks and 6 part-time.

I wish we did this in the States.  I don't get paid for any of my maternity leave unless I have enough sick days to cover it. I think I'll have enough to pay for part of my leave, after that I get 0% pay.

I had heard, though I may be incorrect, that the states has one of the worst policies regarding maternity benefits

It actually has the worst maternity leave policies of all the developed countries.  Awesome, right?

  • If I stay at my current school I'm taking 12 weeks.  I think all but a week and a half would be paid based on my saved days (I just used time in April 2012).

I have an interview on Thursday (cue the nerves).  If I get it and take it, I would take 6-8 weeks, with only 3 weeks paid...

I go on winter break no matter what school I'm at on Dec 20, so I just won't go back and I'll have 2 weeks off while big and pregnant... And my last was born at 37w4d, so I'm anticipating something similar.

  • My leave is unpaid.

My plan right now is to take 6 weeks off, and then go back 3 days a week for another 6 weeks, then go back to my normal schedule of 4 days a week.

This might change, I have no idea what I'm in for.

It *does* make it easier knowing that little one will be taken care of by his grandparents.

I'm a college prof, so I'll take off the full semester and then come back in September.

Here in NJ, we do get 6 weeks of partial pay.  I also have quite a bit of accrued sick time, which I can run through before or after those 6 weeks.  So, some of that half a year of leave will be unpaid, but I have to talk to folks at work to find out exactly how much.  Then again, this is our first, and we've been saving up for a while, so me losing a little income is totally survivable.

I wish I could take a full year, but I don't think we can afford that, especially since we'd lose health insurance (or have to pay steep COBRA charges) if I did.

  • imagepeanut+muse:

They hired me on about 4 months before she went out, both to pick up some of her duties and as other person in the department since they needed someone else anyway. We'll be doing the same this time since we can function with the number of folks we have, but could really use one more person long term.
