Making Own Food

Hi ladies!

We are going to start DS on solids tomorrow, and I am going to try my hand at making my own baby food (some, not all).  Had a couple of questions that I hope you can help me out with! :-)

-- I don't have a "baby food maker," because I don't want to spend the money in case I don't like/have time for making baby food.  I do, however, have a traditional blender and an immersion blender -- do you think those two tools will work?

-- Do I need a steamer of some kind, or can I microwave/boil/bake most foods to soften them up?

-- Are there any foods that cannot be frozen?  (I'm thinking like bananas?)

Thanks! :-)

  • i don't have a steamer, but I use my colinder in a pot and it works great. You can bake or boil most foods though. And a regular blender is fine

  • Your blenders will work just fine I use mine. You might need to add some water to the pures to get them to the consistency you want. I have a steamer basket but bake my sweet potatoes and the were great. Boiling would work too. I also by the frozen veggies in the steam bag and just cook those on the microwave. There are some things that cannot be frozen like bananas and avacado but check out this website:

It has a lot of good advice. Good luck!
  • I've used my immersion blender for everything so far. [She's had avocado, banana, pear & carrot. I have sweet potato and squash in the freezer waiting]

I've steamed everything but I believe you could bake them. The steamer I have is a little rice cooker too and it was like... $16 on Amazon. Might be worth it because steaming helps retain a lot of nutrients that can be lost in boiling.

I hope not, I've frozen everything so far!

I think I'm going to have to get peas/spinach in the jars though because I can't find good looking greens here in Manila.

  • Great!  Thanks for all the helpful advice.  I am looking forward to trying it all out!  I'll definitely look into a steamer basket this week.  We're trying sweet potatoes tonight!
