Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How many oz?

LO is eating 6-7 oz every 4 hours now. She is 3 months (will be 4 months July 22). Our pedi said she should start cereal after our next appt (this month). So I am wondering if she is eating too many oz or this is the right amount and the whole point you integrate cereal?

Re: How many oz?

  • Our LO is 4 months and he eats 4-6 oz. every 3-5 hours.  He usually STTN. We just started him on cereal yesterday but I think more ended up outside his mouth than in!!!   I think integrating cereal early might help with oral development.  Our baby is a chunky monkey so he really doesn't need to gain weight!

  • Food at 6 months to 12 months is really for practice more than nutritional value, as it doesn't replace the amount of BM or formula intake. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say starting earlier is good for oral development. That's a new one.

  • DS will be 4 months on July 26 and has been drinking 6 times a day, 5 to 6 oz every 3 hours on the dot... And his pediatrician wants me to start him on cereal by then as well. I still might wait until he is 6 months old since I don't see the point in starting him earlier... He has 36 oz a day max, which is still very normal.

I don't totally agree with PP though... When my nephew turned 4 months, he was requesting more and more milk every feeding: it came to 9oz every two hours, which according to his ped was way too much. My SIL started him on cereal, along with milk, and he went back to 7oz every three hours. He needed it I guess...

  • Okay great thank you! LO is also a chunky monkey and doesn't need to gain a lot of weight either but when she normally was taking 5-6 she was still sucking and so I tried 7 oz once and she sucked it dry. I just don't know if that is too much for her. She eat every 4 hours though which it used to be 5 oz every 3 hours. So is it okay since she has put more time between feedings but added a couple oz? I know what we start cereal it will be totally different since it will be more filling than formula.
  • My LO is 5 months today (oh my, time flies!) and weighs 15.5lbs. He eats 6 oz every 3-4 hours during the day but sleeps all night from 9pm-7am without waking to eat.
