Anybody use a dresser as a changing table?

I'm hoping to use a dresser as a changing table, since we have the worst closet ever in the room we're planning on using as the nursery and there is also no extra room for a separate changing table. Plus they're kinda ugly IMO.

Anyway, I found a campaign dresser that I love, but it's not very deep. It's 19" deep and most pads at 16-17" deep. How much room on either side of the actual pad do you have? As long as it fits on top without coming over the sides, I think it would be fine. Am I wrong?

Here is the dresser. The total dimensions are something like 70x30x19. The seller also will paint it any color I want and restore the hardware. image

Bonus quesiton---

Also, anybody ever bought a piece of furniture from Etsy or eBay? What shipping method did you use?

Yup. I just bought a changing pad for the top and it worked perfectly. It's a great space saver.
I agree with this.  Just get a changing pad for the top of it. No need for a separate table!

Also I use to keep a small stack of diapers and pack of wipes, diaper cream on the end in a small canvas tote and just kept extras in the closet and refilled when It got low.
Pretty much this. The desser is nice and big and fits all her clothes that aren't hung.

That's what we need, because there is almost no hanging space in the closet. We'll have to hang stuff in our closet. The middle part of this dresser is actually drawers behind the door, so perfect for extra diapers and other junk besides clothes. I want it!

  • I do. My changing pad is exactly as wide as the dresser. Works out fine for us.

We have dressers as changing tables in both kids' rooms. Our dressers are taller though, so it's a good height.

    I love that dresser.

I'm a midget, so the 30" in actually pretty good for me. LOL The dresser in there now is 31" and would work perfectly if it wasn't so ugly.  LOL

  • We use an antique wash stand as a change table. The pad sits perfectly on top of the wash stand. There's maybe a half inch all around.

The wash stand is just a top drawer, then a cabinet below with two shelves. Right now I keep diapers and a plastic container with wipes in the drawer. Extra diapers, wipes, wash clothes, and towels in the cabinet. Once he outgrows the "change table" we'll just take the pad off and keep the wash stand in the room to house whatever he needs. It matches an antique 3/4 bed that he'll use.

  • We use DS's dresser as a changing table but bought a matching topper to give it a more finished look. Love it.

  • Yes! Our daughter has a small bedroom, so we needed to come up with ways (when she was a baby) that wouldn't take up a bunch of unneeded space.  We just bought a pad for the top and used that. It was 100% perfect.

We used the top drawer for supplies (diapers, wipes, butt cream) and filled the rest with clothes.

When she was out of dipes, we tossed the pad and used the top for her own stuff.  7 years later, we still use it and love it.

  • Yes, we put a non-slip pad on the dresser and then the changing pad on top.  It works perfectly.

Ours just fits the top. It's anchored to the back of dresser.

How did you anchor it? With a strap?

I'm over thinking this, but before I sink all the money into this dresser, I just want to make sure. I don't want to mark up the top of the dresser if I can help it, but will if it's a question of safety.

The top of DD1's dresser did get marked up from the changing pad.  I used the same pad for DD2, but used shelf liner under it without any issues. https://www.amazon.com/Grip-Shelf-Drawer-Liner-Black/dp/B000KFSOFI

The changing pad we have has a little strap with a plastic bit, with a hole to screw it onto the back of the dresser. DH didn't want to bother anchoring it, but I pushed the issue. We anchored it and put a shelf liner under the pad just to keep it in place. We've had no problem.

ETA: it doesn't mark the top of the dresser. Our wash stand has a back decorative piece that's maybe 4inches above the top. We unscrewed it, took it off, screwed the little piece on the back of the wash stand and put the decorative piece back. It's so it doesn't flip or slide forward.

  • I just used a dresser for both DS and DD. the changing pad was as deep as the dresser. I have a couple of feet of clear space on the end which is great for anything I need to keep up there.
    I wouldn't bother with a change table.

    BTW, congrats on platinum!

Yep, I was aiming for 15k and had no idea that would be platinum! LOL I need to quit now I think.

    Same for us.

After having one of those huge, hideous, useless-after-baby-grows-into-a-young-lady-changing-table/tower-combos with Emily, I swore I'd never spend the money on another one. So, instead, I purchased the double wide Hermes dressers from Ikea for Nolan and threw a changing pad ontop. It's almost as wide, half was long, and has worked better than expected the last 2 years!

That piece of furniture you have picked out to purchase is gorgeous. I really love that mid-century Modern-esque look! So unique :)

  • We use the Ikea Hemnes as a changing table and it works great. We have just a standard changing pad from BRU on it and it has about 2" between the edge of the dresser and the changer.
