Re: First trimester screening what to expect?
I had mine done at my MFM. Mine was just an ultrasound-took about 45min. Then I met with the doctor who went over all the results. Good luck!
I'm sure every place does it a little differently. Where I went, I first met with a genetic counselor, who told me what they were testing for. She told me she would be calling me within a week with my results.
I first had my u/s. They measured for overall growth, presence of nasal bone, development of brain and limbs, amount of fluid behind the neck. As you probably know, 12 weeks is really too early to tell the gender definitely. Then they drew blood, just one vial.
Because there were 3 different steps, with the wait time in between it took about 2 hours.
The doctor will use u/s measurements and your bloodwork results to figure out your odds for different chromosomal disorders. Based on your odds they will suggest more invasive testing like an amnio, which is the only way to get a yes/no answer on whether your fetus has a chromosomal disorder.
Good luck!
