Do you count fussing and grunting as your lo crying when doing sleep training. Meaning do you start your intervals of checking in or do you wait for full blown cries to soothe?
Are you talking about the Ferber method? If so, you are NOT supposed to soothe, just kind of show up near them. I counted real crying, but we only lasted through two nights so I'm no expert.

I am assuming she is talking more along the lines of 10 min CIO sesh, then soothe, then repeat until an hour has passed or child is sleeping. That's what I did with both my kids.
And I only count actual crying. When she gets to a point of just fussing, I know she'll be asleep soon, so I let her do her thing.

I agree. We only counted crying. But if say, in the 10 minute period you get crying, fussing, then back to crying again, I would have counted the fussing in with the crying. Not paused the timing, so to speak. It just depends what you have at the end of the time interval, not what happens during the beginning or middle. If it is just fussing at the end, I usually give LO a few more minutes to figure out if he is going to go to sleep or get upset. If he escalates to crying, I go in and sooth. If not, I let him work it out.
