Bike seat/trailer

Would you put one on the back of your bike yet? Or a bike trailer? Has anyone used one? Would you do a trailer or a seat? And obviously we would use a helmet so if anyone has a brand they prefer....mine is a bell and it works.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

Re: Bike seat/trailer

  • We have been looking into the seats. I have heard too many horror stories of the trailers overturning. It looks like about 40 dollars will get the seat. I am just struggling to find the helmets for their age. However. I did find one the other day that was a Bell that was the right size but they only had it in hot pink, so I am gaining hope that we will find one!

I actually saw a trailer topple once. I would love a cargo bike but they are so expensive!

  • We have a Raskullz helmet, but if I lived in the US, I'd totally have a CAMP or a Nutcase. They don't carry her size here.

In terms of a seat or trailer, my conclusion is that a trailer is better. I have personally never heard of one rolling, but they have roll bars For that, and if the kid is properly strapped in, he should be fine. If I fall, I'd rather she have that protection that not. There's also sun protection and many convert to a stroller with a few snaps. We are totally going this route.

Ours is from Mountain Equipment Coop. Not sure if that's a CDN store or not.

ETA: this is LiliD...apparently I have Another account that I randomly get signed into automatically? Sorry...

I'm really torn because I want it do we can run errands together. No one and I mean no one rides on the street here so I'd probably just stick to sidewalks and small streets anyway. It would make my life so much easier.

  • We're getting a trailer for G's first birthday, but we haven't really looked yet. They did have appropriate sized helmets at the bike shop when we got DH's new road bike.  Both DH and I have Gyro helmets and we love them, but I think the kid's ones we saw were bell.

We have thought about a trailer, maybe a seat when older. If we do get s trailer, I will not be using it on roads, only bike paths or other paved paths closed to automobiles.

Haha!  I have one of those accounts too!  I just looked up those helmets and the nutcase ones are super cute.  We have about 20 stores that carry them within a 25 mile radius, so I guess I know what we're doing tomorrow.  We don't have mountain equipment coop, but we do have REI, which I am guessing is similar since it is a coop that sells outdoor equipment!

I'd get a Burley trailer on craigslist.I like the lower center of gravity, and it gives you cargo for whatever errands you're running.

If you feel safe enough with a seat, then you could just get a little cargo wagon.

Both are okay at 1yr, with helmets. We have a bell, but I'd get a full skull one if you're out in traffic.

  • We got the ibert bike seat and we're getting DD a helmet for her birthday, and will start taking her for rides after her first birthday:

I decided on a seat because I read some scary stuff about the bumpiness kids encounter in trailers.

In my research though, there was no clear winner in seats vs. trailers.  There seem to be a lot of pros and cons of both.

BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

  • We've been tossing the idea back and forth of either a trailer or a seat as well.  We haven't started looking, since both of our bikes need tires (thanks "bike path" that was filled with prickers) so that's at the bottom of our list. I think T would like a seat better, he'd be closer to us and have a better view, but he would have to go on DH's bike, I'm not the greatest bike rider lol.

  • We're going to do the seat option but not until next year. A friend of mine had one and said they couldn't really use it until their son was closer to 2.

  • We actually just bought a trailer at the beginning of the week. It's amazing! It's a Schwinn and hold two kids (for the future) or one in the middle, 5 point harness for both options. It has sun/weather shade, and a water bottle holder on both sides, plus cargo room in the back. The tires are 20 inch and it's very sturdy, also came with a third wheel so you can attach that and use it as a stroller.

We went to tons of stores before we found a helmet that would fit Bella, it's a Bell with lady bugs on it. A lot of the other 1+ helmets were too big, or stores only had 3+ or 5+ which was so irritating (why sell a trailer and not a helmet to fit the child going in the trailer?!?!?)

Any way we really like it! Highly recommend it!
