Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sudden fears?

At almost 15 months old DS suddenly seems to have developed fears about a lot of things that never bothered him before. Riding on elevators (although he had to go on a really noisy wheelchair lift once and I think that's where this fear comes from), driving through tunnels, the doctor using the stethoscope ...

Anyone else's LO going through this? I am guessing it's just a normal developmental phase of some sort, but I wish I could help him through it somehow.

Re: Sudden fears?

  • My DS is 22 months and he is suddenly afraid of thunder. He was yelling, "mama, scared" from his crib the other night during a storm. So I snuggled him and took him to the porch to see the rain. I talked to him about thunder and said how pretty storms sound. I did the same with my daughter and she loves the sound now. I just wait until he calms down and take him to whatever is bothering him and let him see what the purpose of it is. Maybe w the elevator you could act excited like " ok, are you ready" then "weeeeee" when it starts going. Then say that was fun after. Maybe if he sees you enjoying it he won't think it's so bad.
