No sippy cup?

Anyone else's pedi recommending to I right from bottle to regular cup and skip the sippy altogether? I think it sounds impossible and crazy. Thoughts?

Re: No sippy cup?

  • We do straw cups for my DD (not sippy cups) and Doidy cups as regular cup trainers. The traditional sippy cups still ruin their teeth. They should use straw cups by 1 year old and regular cups shortly afterwards.

  • Like PP, we're skipping "sippy" cups and just introduced straw cups right off the bat.  Sometimes she tries to drink out of my cup, and I let her - but it just runs down her face :)
  • Can you ladies recommend your straw type cups?

Get the Playtex Lil Grippers. They were the best when DD was small. They were easy for her to hold and they have a bit that you press down to get water into the straw to help.

  • I'm skipping the sippy as well. A speech language pathologist I know blames them (with extended use) for a lot of speech issues in young children. Apparently to use them the tongue moves to an unnatural position. Again, that's with extended use, but I'd rather skip it than have to take it away later. LO doesn't take bottles, so I've started her taking cold pumped milk from a shot glass. We have the wash or toss spout cups, but she has trouble with those. I'm thinking of getting a straw cup too so she can drink independently.

  • IMO..I think if our generation is fine for the most part then scrap all of what you hear and do what YOU think is best for your child. My LO gets a bottle for naps and bedtime only, she gets a sippy cup with meals and snacks.

  • DS never took a bottle and is EBF so I started him with the playtex little gripper straw cup and he loves it.  He gets water only so far but he does a good job getting the water up the straw.  I'll probably go from straw cups to regular and will have skipped bottles, sippies and soothers all together.

Same for us.  They aren't leak proof (as they claim on the packaging), but they're easiest for her to use.  And I only give it to her when she's in the high chair, and only put an ounce or two of water in it, so the leaking doesn't matter to me.

  • We started with a regular sippy and he got frustrated trying to tip it up enough. We just bought a Munchkin straw cup yesterday. He seems to understand it much more but can't suck hard
enough to get the water all the way up. I think we will try the Playtex Lil Gripper as well.

  • We plan on skipping traditional sippy cups and using a straw cup.

Thats a stupid way to think. Things and research has come soooooo far over the last 23 years I've been alive. The "we did it when we were kids and I was fine" mentallity is the reason why kids die from car accidents because the FF too soon, why babies die from crib bumpers still, and why people do not follow booster laws and then the child gets seriously hurt or flung from the car.

My DD has DS and the speech pathologist explained that the sippy cups promote a "tongue thrust" that is also used for bottle feeding.  With low muscle tone this is bad for speech development.  When you drink from a straw, you have to pull in your tongue.  The longer and more complex the bends in the straw (like those twisty straws) the more tongue control you need which in turn means dexterity for speech.

We used the Playtex Take and Toss straw cups or the Tilty cups with DD. The Tilty doesn't have a valve and teaches them to use the correct positioning for using a regular cup.

Yes, but it's also a bit of an over reaction to think that if you don't follow every little guideline your child will be ruined.  We're talking about sippy cups which millions of kids use and don't later require speech therapy.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

We always had our kids in regular cups by @ 8 months old.  We used a straw cup when we traveled.  It was a lot easier than you think (a regular cup).  When they were @ 6 months old we just gave them cups to play with in the bath and of course they drank from them, etc.  It was very natural.  My youngest is 6 months old and just from watching us, she tries to grab cups to drink.  Its really not impossible and much easier IMO then sippy cups.  With our first I think we went through 3 different kinds of sippy cups before we found one he would use and then we never really used it because a regular cup was much easier.  Our 2nd the straw cup was super easy to grasp but again we almost always used a regular cup.
