One breast on strike the other producing is that normal?

Hello ladies,

When I BF my right side is producing great even when I pump I can get 4-5 oz in 15-20 mins but my left side I can only get 1-2oz, and my twins have a issue latching on that left. I was told I have an inverted nipple, how to fix that because I have so much engorgement on that side. Is that normal for women to have one good breast and one bad one, I feel like I have a defected breast :).

In addition, do any one of you ;ladies BF from the bottles sometimes or strictly because I am thinking about just pumping only and let them get the breast milk from the bottles, I wonder is that ok?

  • Its normal to have one breast that doesn't produce as much as the other. For me, its my left side. Its always an oz or two behind. I pump and bottle feed only. We had latch issues and he wasn't transferring everything so I was always worried he wasnt getting enough. For me, I like knowing what he gets. Hope this helps

  • If you have an inverted nipple on the left you might try a nipple shield. My LC gave me one and it helped so much with LO. Also try massaging the left side while you pump or nurse to help the milk come out. I've found that massaging helped boost up my supply after a few days.

I pump and bottle feed because of a heart condition. Honestly, im a lot less stressed about feeding than I would be if we were exclusively nursing. I know exactly how much she's eating and I dint have to be the one to feed her. if I need to do something else, I can hand her to my mom or sister to feed.

  • Try to extract the nipple before a feed using your hands or a pump. Stimulate it then try to get as much breast tissue as you can in your LOs mouth to stimulate sucking.

  • Thank you ladies, I will ask lactaction about the nipple shield, I just though since I am not nursing them exclusively that they was not getting that bonding time with me. I figure as long as they are getting the BF milk from a bottle that they are still getting my nutrients.
