not sure what to think... long

We have a cousin that is pregnant. She is on the younger side-21 and really doesn't know anything that should be happening or going to happen.  This pregnancy was not planned.  Some of the things she tells me her OB does/says i am not sure what to think.  here are a few of the things that she has told me.

1) she will induce at 38 weeks for the he11 of it???- shes 21, no problems, 1st baby- why?

2) she measures her belly from the bottom of her boobs to her belly button???? the question marks is all i have to say about that

3) told her if she didn't want she didn't have to take her vitamin- not a big deal but your a dr. i think you should be incouraging this- now i did not take mine very well

these are just a few things that i am not sure what to think about her OB. I don't what to tell her i think her dr. is a weirdo and i would change if i was her, but i her to have good care.

Sorry if anyone disagrees with what i said about the induction, measuring and vitamins, this is just what i think.   Thanks for listening ladies

  • And you're sure your cousin doesn't have anything confused when retelling you this stuff?

  • That crossed my mind too, another reason I don't want to say anything

  • Hopefully, at 21, with an unplanned pregnancy, and you just having had a baby, she might see some "helpful hints" about things to discuss with OB as non intrusive? I am 34 and very much planned this, and I am shocked at how much I had to learn! Maybe you could email her links to some good websites and articles, at least, to help encourage her to make smart choices, like taking her prenatal, unless she eats a very balanced diet, and going the full 40 weeks unless there are issues...? Not sure that really helps, but I don't think it hurts to offer advice to any new mom to be, as long as it is done respectfully.

Good luck to you and her!

  • She's got to me off on the measuring thing, that makes absolutely no sense. Maybe doc was taking that measurement for some other reason, although I have no clue what that would be.

As far as the vitamin, there are a lot of women who "can't" take vitamins and maybe the OB told her the baby would be ok without it as long as she ate a very balanced diet, maybe she left that part out (or selectively heard it).

As far as the induction, I highly, highly doubt her OB told her that. Maybe she got 'full term" confused with induction or something.

  • My 21 yo SIL and I go to the very same practice and the stuff that she tells me is completely different from my experience with both pregnancies. I'd just chalk it up to her being confused and slightly idealistic.
