stop me if you're had this question asked a gabillion times...re: clomid

Hi Ladies, I have a question about clomid and ovidrel and figured you guys could help me.  I'm currently on a pretty medicated cycle.  I'm taking metformin, increased synthroid, finished up 5 days of clomid, and triggered with ovidrel yesterday.  I will start crinone on Saturday.

My RE said the increased chance of twins on clomid is roughly 5-10% depending on how your body reacts to the drug.  He didn't mention anything about the ovidrel contributing to that.  However, when I read the Ovidrel instructions last night I noticed the packaging from our fertility pharmacy said "This drug increases the likelyhood of multiple births"

Looking into it a little further it looks like Ovidrel will trigger your body to release all mature follices, not just one as regular ovulation would. I have had cycles in the past where I've released two follicles, so I knew that I "could" become pregnant with twins, but since I have infertility, I never thought much about it.

I'm asking only because I had three follicles above an 18 during my follicle check on Wednesday.  I'm just wondering how many of you got pregnant with twins or triplets on a combined clomid/ovadril cycle.

  • I did menpuir and ovadril. I had my follicle scan they told me I had 1 good follicle and do more day of menpuir and then trigger. Well my 1 good follicle turned in to 4 good follicles cause I got pregnant with quads and loss one. But I had done a a clomid only cycle and had 3 good follicles and that resulted in a single baby that we lost. So it is all in the air on how many will work. But all of us on here have twins or more a good place to ask is also on success after they will have people who had a few and had 1 kid I am sure. Good luck.

  • I didn't get pregnant until we moved to IVF, but three mature follies means you have to be ready for the possibility of three babies. The trigger will cause you to release all three of those eggs.

  • I did injectables and ovidrel. I had 3 mature follicles during my check next day did ovidrel shot. Then did IUI 2 weeks later HCG was 348 then 1,374 the 13,248 with an u/s showing 2 sacs. So I am 11 weeks with twins they said the chance of triplets was not very high bc I am older 37... Good luck!!!
  • I had 3 IUI's with 2 and 3 follies and didn't get pregnant at all. It's like a crap shoot. Lots of luck that it works for you with one healthy bean.

  • I was on a very low dose of Clomid, 25mg. However, I'd been taking that dose for a while and had only been releasing one follicle. The month I got pg just so happened to be the month I released two.

  • I did an injectible and Ovidrel cycle.  I only had one egg close to maturity at 16mm at trigger time.  The rest were 14mm and smaller.  Obviously something else matured quickly since I have di/di twins from that cycle.

  • I had three good size folicles on clomid and ovedril and I'm pregnant with twins. I would say forget all the percentages and ask yourself and your partner would you be able to handle twins or triplets? If the answer is no then don't risk it, good luck!

  • I could handle twins, right now Triplets feels unmanageable.  I'm willing to bet thought that Most* people can't see themselves having three babies until they are in that situation.

I'm getting a new RE for next cycle, the current one is retiring, so I plan to go in with a ton of questions...which means we'll probably take a break for next cycle.

As for this cycle, I trigger on Wed and dtd w,th, and today  as directed.  So we'll see.

  • Our twins were on our 7th IUI cycle.  So we did Bravelle/Menpur, Ovidrel trigger, 2 IUI days in a row and steroids.

I had 4 follicles.  Since this was our 7th attempt, I said "I'm all in, lets do it!"

  • I took clomid 100mg and ovidrel trigger with timed intercourse. We had four mature follicles and two took. We had twins. :

  • Ovidrel just mimicks LH - they have a similar subunit.  So if anything is mature, it can possible ovulate.  But like in any cycle only about 30% of fertilized eggs will implant and make it.

My twins were 50 mg clomid no ovidrel.

Your RE should have cancelled you if you were not OK with trips.

Most likely it won't be three and here's hoping it's at least one!  :)

  • We used clomid by itself 3 times w/ TI; all failed.  We did 50mg Clomid + HCG shot and IUI 1 time and had twins.  That cycle I had one mature follicle at the u/s, and three that were "too small" according to our doctor.  Well, one of them must've had a growth spurt just in time - b/c we ended up with twins!

Yours could still be identical.  1 in 8 di-di are identical.

The more I think about it the more I wonder if they are identical.  He was so sure that only one follie would be mature enough.  I'm excited to see them (for so many reasons, obviously!) and see if they are identical or fraternal - so that I can give people a 100% answer on what kind of twins they are when asked!
