? for Chicago Area People

We are taking Kate to Chicago for a few days as part of her birthday celebration. I guess it's also a getaway for us, but the activities will focus mainly on her. How is the Lincoln Park Zoo? I never went there pre-kid, and we are thinking about stopping on our way back home. Worth it? It's free, so at least if it blows, it's no big deal. She loved our local zoo last weekend. Thanks for your advice.

  • I don't live in Chicago but I used to intern at the Henry Doorly Zoo in omaha and we took our docents on a trip to the Lincoln Zoo. It is a nice zoo, very clean and their animals are kept well if that matters to you. It is spaced out a bit so I would bring a stroller but most of it is flat! Have fun!! The Shed aquarium is also awesome if you are interested. They have beluga whales!

  • It's pretty nice. There is a lot of open space and a nice park right by there to play. There is also the beach really close if you wanted to do that and plenty to eat in Lincoln Park. The conservatory there is a nice little place to go which is right on the property. Little ones really like the small Mammal house. I highly recommend that because they can actually see the animals really well. Also the indoor seal viewing area is the coolest (in temperature) place to go. I often have to visit that area twice because I get cranky when hot. There is also a carousel (with benches for little ones) and a train ride.If you're staying downtown, consider taking the 151 bus. Lots of tourists take it and then you won't have to deal with the parking lot, which is hell on wheels. AND finally, if you're hot or tired of being outside, the Peggy Notebeart Nature Museum is across the street and it is so awesome and so manageable with a little one. It's my favorite museum to take a little one. They have this room with water, a treehouse room, a slide room, these dancing butterfly lights and a live butterfly room.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • Thanks to everyone for the info. Yes, how the animals are kept/treated is always a concern of mine when visiting zoos, so I'm glad to know they are kept appropriately there. We had planned on Shedd Aquarium and now we will add the Nature Museum to our list as well. We live about 2 hours from Chicago, so my husband and I are frequent visitors but this will be the first time with Kate. This is our "test the waters" vacation.
