What did your parents do to you?

My mom and I were just laughing at some of the crazy things they did when I was a baby (obviously not realizing how crazy they were at the time). My favorite example:

My parents knew how important car seats were, so I NEVER was in a car without being securely fastened into ours. The only hitch was that the only vehicle my parents owned was an old pickup truck and there wasn't room for two adult and a car seat, so my mom would get it, fasten her seat belt, and then hold the car seat on her lap! We traveled all over the country like this. They'd take breaks when the seat started digging into her legs too much. Pretty much just ensured that if we were ever in an accident, I was going to be a baby projectile careening through the windshield, but at the time they thought they were being super vigilant about my safety. My mom says it didn't occur to her until years later how deeply flawed their logic was.

How about you? Survive any crazy parenting? (And I say this knowing full well that my daughter will one day be telling her friends or space aliens or whatever they do in the future about some crazy stupid things I did).

I can't think of any except that instead of a crib, they pulled out a dresser drawer and put me in there the first few months or they made a bassinet out of a suitcase and pulled the top off it. It was the 70's and they were very poor back then. Oh, and they told me I was soooooo very very close to being named TRIXIE!!! WTF

Nowadays they could take some photos of that and put it on Pinterest and people would ooh and ahh over it. :-)

  • Only thing I can think of off the top of my head was sleeping in a long basket on the floor when we would travel. When I got too big then I would just sleep on the floor with a bunch if pillows and blankets. All my plates and bowls were real plates and bowls not plastic. And nothing was ever sterilized. Also my parents never baby proofed anything. So these are the exact things I don't get why people are so paranoid these days bc we are all alive aren't we!?!

Apparently I could crawl out of my crib before I could walk and would crawl into my parents room, so the pediatrician told my mom to buy a mattress and put it on the floor so I wouldn't hurt myself, and put a screen door on my room and lock it from the outside so I couldn't get out.

  • Lurking from June.. hope it's okay if I post... I'm bored and still waiting for baby, Haha.

Apparently, I was a climber. My mom had pictures of me before I was two climbing her bakers shelves to eat cat food. She kept the cat's bowl up there to keep me from getting to the food, but I guess that didn't stop me. And I'm pretty sure the shelves weren't anchored to the wall. People didn't believe I was climbing the shelves, so one day she took pictures before pulling me down.
  • I was talking to my mom about crib safety and how you have to buy a new crib, you shouldn't use an old one.  Well, in the 70s my mom had bought a used crib set from a neighbor when she was pregnant.  There were complications with labor and she unfortunately wasn't able to use the crib until my sister came along in the 80s and then me.  Yup, definitely up to code.  Also, when I was talking to her about how I was limiting my seafood intake, she told me not to worry that she ate lobster almost everyday in the summer while pregnant with me that my grandfather caught out of the ever so clean boston harbor.  Mmmm chemicals.
  • A lot of crazy stuff was done to me as a baby. My mom was in an abusive relationship and we lived at the salvation army for a long time. So she had ZERO baby items. I rode on the passenger side floorboard of the car. I slept in a drawer.

The sitter (who is our family now and saved our lives) smoked nonstop in the house, fed me coffee in my bottle, and put me to bed on a blow up pool raft.
