Side pain :(

When I peed late last night, there were a couple of drops of blood. Upon further inspection -- checking my cervical fluid internally and checking for abrasions externally -- I came to the conclusion that the blood was coming from my urine. Now, I'm not 100% sure, of course. But I dabbed at my urethra and there was another very small drop of blood.

This morning when I woke up at 5:30am, I had some pretty serious right flank pain. I took some Tylenol at 6am, but over the past 3 hours, it has definitely gotten slightly worse. I have a history of kidney infections and stones and recurrent UTIs. I haven't had a lot of issues in the past 10 years, but prior to that (from about 16 yrs to 25 yrs old) I was in and out of the hospital with kidney issues. So I know what kidney pain feels like. I'm 99% sure this is kidney pain.

I don't really want to go to the ER and have it be something silly, but my gut is telling me to get it checked out. I'm going to call my OB's office in about 15 minutes, but I know they are closed today. So I have a feeling a trip to the ER is inevitable.

Sigh. This is so not what I want to be doing today. :(

Re: Side pain :(

  • So sorry you are feeling bad, but I think it is way better to be safe than sorry.  I think a kidney infection should be treated right away in pregnancy, and i think doctor's are pretty used to mom's being worried.  I would say blood coming from anywhere is never a "silly thing".  Have it checked out so you can enjoy the rest of your weekend in peace.  hugs to you.  keep us updated.

  • So sorry peanut!! I know the ER sucks, but it's probably best to go (unless the OB has an on call person who can see you at a different office or something.)

    Hope you feel better soon!!

  • Eep - I don't envy you at all today! I'm not a "quick call the doc" kind of pregnant lady, but I'd say this is worth getting checked out sooner than later. FX they can do something to help and keep it from getting any worse.

    Keep us posted!

  • I'm so sorry you're going though this. I was in the hospital twice last summer while I was pregnant with kidney stones. It is the worst pain ever and I would put it right up there with contractions.

I would definitely call your OB and let them know what's going on and they will likely send you to the hospital. Mine always told me to go to labor and delivery that way they can monitor the baby. I had contractions each time I was in the hospital and had to get shots to stop them. They gave me a ton of IV fluids to try to flush out the stones and some pain medicine.

Good luck and keep us updated. I really hope you can get some relief.

ETA: I wanted to add that I had a friend with the same thing that was sent to the ER in the same hospital by her OB and she said they were awful to her and not understanding at all. The L and D nurses are definitely much better with handling pregnant women. So if at all possible I would try to go to L and D over the ER.

  • Echoing what others are saying and get it checked out. If you feel like going to the ER than go. Good thoughts coming your way.

I echo pps and would definitely head into the ER to get it checked out. I am so sorry you are in pain and dealing with this right now. I also get kidney stones and recurrent UTIs. I have to stay hydrated as much as possible. When I was pregnant with DD, I ended up with a couple UTIs. My doctor told me sometimes UTIs can become more frequent in pregnant women. Sending you many thoughts and prayers that you get better soon! ::hugs::

Oh that's awful! I hope you're seen to quickly so that you can get the pain under control and get some answers as to what is causing it... It sounds very similar to my friends situation... She had two kidney stones! I believe we're more susceptible while pregnant?
Thoughts, prayers, and good vibes coming your way!
  • Absolutely call your doctor - while the office is closed I have to believe someone's on call who can tell you what to do.  It sounds painful and the annoyance of dealing with this definitely shakes you up.  BUT it sounds like, based on what you've described, that this is NOT baby related which deserves a BIG sigh of relief.
Me: 37 DH: 37 TTC since Jan 2012. RE consult and initial testing done in Aug 2012: SA fine, AMH 1.1 & HSG clear - on way to IUI but got BFP on 9/10/2012. m/c 10/3/2012 at 6w5d. BFP next cycle which was a c/p. IUI #1: Clomid 100mg 12/6= BFN. IUI#2 (unmedicated) Jan 2013 = BFN. Hysteroscopy 1/25/13. IUI#3 Clomid 100mg 2/23 = BFN IUI# 4: BFN. • Sorry you are dealing with that. Definitely call your Dr. UTIs and kidney infections are not something to be left untreated while pregnant. This is a case where it is justifiable to err on the side of caution.
  • Unfortunately pregnancy wildly ups susceptibility to UTIs , bladder infections, and all sorts of other [not so] lovely things.  I hope your pain is manageable and that the ER docs and nurses are able to do something to get you feeling better soon.Hang in there!

  • Ugh!  I am so sorry!  I've had a history with kidney stones, but haven't had one in about 6 years, but you never forget the pain!!  Hopefully, there is no infection!  Start drinking!!  I once had a doctor tell me as soon as I feel kidney pain, drink orange juice!  Keep us posted!  And hopefully you feel better soon!
  • Good luck! I also have pretty chronic kidney issues and do everything in my power to avoid ER.

Before pregnancy, if I felt the tiniest hint of flank pain, I would force down as much water as humanly possible and try to get the stone to at least move to another location on its own.

My thoughts are with you today....ouch!

  • I have issues as well and that sounds like a bad UTI of kidney related issue to me. Sorry your going through this bc its so painful and progresses quickly. When I went my urologist said that I must have had it for a long time for there to be blood clots, but I didn't really have any symptoms until then. It stinks to go to the ER, but maybe they can start you on some antibiotics and then once the utrine culture comes back, they can put you on something that will fight the type of infection you prob have based off of the results I the kind you have is resistant. Feel better soon and hopefully you can ge this cleared up soon!

  • Oh no. I'm so sorry. Those are painful and miserable. Like you, I used to get recurrent kidney infections and be in and out of the hospital. I know it's a crappy way to spend a Friday, but I hope you get relief real soon.

  • That sounds awful and so uncomfortable for you!  I don't have a lot of experience with kidney problems, but it's never a bad idea to get checked out by the doc, especially with your history.

FX for a quick recovery!  It sucks to be sick!

  • It absolutely sounds like a kidney stone to me, and I would most definitely call the on call and head to the ER [I agree with going to LD if you can]. I'm so sorry you're going through this. I've been there, and it hurts like a mofo and just plain sucks. Good luck! I hope you feel better really soon. Keep us posted!

  • Good luck peanut- I hope you are in and out of there and it's something that can be easily treated!

  • Hopefully if you do call the doctors they can get you in and feeling better soon! Bleeding is terrible coming from anywhere but I'm glad it's not cervical.

  • I spoke with the on call OB. She said that based on my symptoms and history of kidney problem, that she was fairly certain that it's kidney stones. Unless a stone gets stuck, treatment is very conservative. She said I should monitor the pain and if it gets significantly worse (or if I get a fever or can't pass urine), head to the ER. Likely all they will do is give me stronger pain meds and check to make sure a stone isn't stuck. Since I've had stones before, I am not really panicking or planning to run to the ER. I'm glad I called because she set my mind at ease a bit. I'm just going to hope the stone(s) pass as painlessly as possible.

So Tylenol, water, and lots of rest is in the cards for me for now. Thank you for all of your support. I had a moment of panic this morning, for sure.

  • Just logging on and saw your update.  I'm glad you called your OB and you don't have to go to the ER as of now.  I hope the pain lightens up for you.  That sounds awful.
