Fork and Spoon

Are your LOs eating with a fork and/or spoon?

He is learning to use the spoon. I let him try it out with every meal. He is most successful with foods like yogurt, applesauce, ect.

...He also learned he could mash his peas with the back of the spoon and eat them that way. It's been an experience. lol.

  • DS is really good with a spoon, but only if I load it for him and then hand it to him.  He has no real success in actually getting food on it himself at this point.  Same with a fork.  We use a spoon for at least some part of pretty much every meal just so that he gets the coordination thing down.

  • My dd can use a fork, but can't load it by herself. When she tries to do it herself it looks like a scary movie. She just starts stabbing her plate, and then gets angry. So I help her load it, then she takes it from there. With a spoon she really struggles because she has a tendency of swirling her utensil as it goes in her mouth, so everything on the spoon falls off just before it makes into her mouth.

  • DD is pretty good with a spoon. She can load it and usually gets most of it into her mouth. Forks are a little harder.

  • Trying. When i feed LO I give him a fork or spoon. It is mostly a messy game for him, but he tries. DH wont let him try because he doesnt want the mess.

  • Alexander does great with both but he winds up having too much fun stabbing and scooping so midway through most meals, he just wants to play. I usually have to step in with him with another spoon to help him finish the job in a reasonable amount of time.

  • DD can fairly successfully use a spoon by herself.  She has problems with food slipping off the spoon mid-movement but she is getting markedly better.  We have some take and toss forks, but they are really more like sporks.  DD uses them interchangeably with the spoons, but doesn't use them any differently. She does still revert to picking up food since it is faster and more reliable.
