August 2012 Moms

We're ready.

So, I've read, read, and read that at this point, our kids will start showing signs of transitioning to one nap, but they're really not ready, and we should hold off until at least 15 months because the transition will be easier.

Well, tell that to my 11 month old who has straight out refused a second nap for the third day now. We're at the max WT of 4 hours. He's taking an awesome two hour morning nap, without as much as an second of crying, and then the afternoon nap...forget it.

My conclusion - he's ready. He transitioned to two naps way before every one else at 6 months and did great, so it makes sense that he'd transition early this go around too.

I'm over this whole hour long protest of the second nap thing.

  • If he's ready then just go for it. You won't know unless you try anyway. I hope the transition is painless!!!
FWIW, DD dropped her second nap at 14 months and that transition was HELLL. So much for it being "easier when they're older". Each kid is different so Gio may just surprise you and do the one nap without a problem!
I'm so looking forward to the one nap. It's SO nice to have an extra bit of free time when you're not stuck at home.

  • Yeah, totally depends on the kid!  DS took 2 naps til 15 months, and then consolidated to one 4-hour nap.  He still sleeps 3 hours most of the time, at 2.5.  DD has taken 1 nap since 7-8 months old.  If Gio's ready, he's ready!

  • V is doing one nap. She rested this morning and never fell asleep. It's now 3:30 and she just now taking a nap. She tends to do pretty good with longer wake times. Im also tired of fighting for the morning nap.

  • We're right behind you! J dropped to two naps around 6 months also and he's starting to show all the signs of being ready.

  • Amir is showing signs of moving to one nap. I've pushed his morning to 1130/12 with his wake up time at 8/830. So far it's working alright. He goes down by 830/9.

  • Let me tell you, I read your post and thought to myself: this won't happen to us for a while! Well, today he has only taken one nap and Is a bear right now. He usually stays up until about 8 o'clock. I don't think tonight will go well

  • If he's ready then he's ready. The books are just guidelines. You need follow your baby's cues. Always. I say just skip the second nap and try to put him to bed earlier. Maybe he'll sleep in later too?

  • I think I read that bedtime may be a bit earlier as he adjusts to one nap.

Ds also switched to 2 naps at 6 months old, but he shows no signs of dropping a nap [Thank God]. He's still on the 2 3 4 schedule.

  • Ok, it's of course totally possible but there IS a wonder week that is hitting our babies now - B has been refusing 2 naps, really only taking 1 (kind of). I know it's a phase though and in a week or so we will be back to normal.

Again, every baby is different for sure - but it's RARE to go down to one nap so soon.
