Babies on the Brain

It just got real!

We had our preconception care appointment yesterday. I'm on a host of allergy medications, so we needed a separate appointment to go through the list and make sure nothing was going to be detrimental to conception and pregnancy. Luckily, nothing was, so my doctor gave us the all clear!

After the appointment, my husband said, "Well, shoot, I thought we'd have to wait for you to step off some of your meds. I thought we'd have a hard date to start, but we just got a green light! When should we start?"

We both thought we would hear that I needed to wait 90 days to clear my allergy medications or that I would need to switch to prenatal vitamins for 30 days. Nope. My allergy meds and vitamins were cleared as fine for trying to conceive. She just said to switch to a prenatal with DHA when I get my BFP.

Has anyone else had this experience? How did you decide to start? We are thinking in a month because we're both in weddings in the first half of August, so it would be nice to not have everyone speculating as to why I'm not drinking!

Edited to add: I wouldn't be drinking at those weddings because if we started trying now, I'd know if I was pregnant before. I definitely do not intend to stop drinking just because we're trying!

  • I would start PNV now.  They have extra folic acid and it is better if the folic acid has time to build up in your system.

We never had a preconception appointment (They are unnecessary unless you have medical conditions or medications that need to be adressed).  We just picked a time to start and I just didn't start my next pack of BC.

Also unless you know you are pregnant there is no reason not to drink.  I drank while we were TTC on our own and while we were doing IUIs (I didn't get drunk, but I enjoyed a few glasses of wine when I felt like it).  I will probably not drink during our upcoming IVF cycle.

  • When we first started TTC, I asked about it at my annual appointment. Doctor went ahead and put me on PNV at that time (February) knowing we were planning on TTC in June.  GL

I highly recommend the book Taking Control of Your Fertility. It's amazing what I learned about my body.  I picked mine up on half.com for like $4.

We discussed the folic acid thing - my multivitamin has 200% of the RDA, which my doctor said was just fine until I'm pregnant. She looked at the bottle and basically said as long as I've got that, I'm fine.

I've actually already been through a natural family planning course, so I'm well-versed in fertility awareness. I may check out that book if I think I need more information, though - it seems to be the most recommended book in that area!

Oh, my plan is definitely to drink while TTC - I think it can only help our chances of conception! It's just that if we start now, we would know if I was pregnant before those weddings in August - I should ovulate around July 14 and could have a BFP as early as July 27 because I have a short cycle. So, people would notice I wasn't drinking and start asking questions before I'm ready to admit we're pregnant. That's what I'm hoping to avoid because one wedding is my BIL's, and my husband's family will be a (good) mess when they find out I'm expecting! We maintained for our entire four years of marriage that we were never having kids because we figured everyone would leave us alone if we said that - and to their credit, they have. I cannot wait for their reactions! :)
