Re: Pregnant & TTC After a Preemie Check In 7/04/13

  • I have friends who had twin girls at 29 weeks. Two years later, they had another DD who was FT. The one thing I remembered her saying was that having a FT baby did not take away any of the guilt and trauma of having preemies. I did not truly know what that meant until this week.

A day after being home with Max, my son asks, "Was she born with two working eyes?" (He lost vision in one of his eyes due to ROP around 2 years old). I felt a sudden rush of emotions that mainly consists of guilt of my body having failed to keep him safe. I haven't stopped crying about what he asked every time I think about it.

I didn't really expect those feelings to go away just because I had a ft baby, but it's almost like it is worse because I was able to do it for one but not the other. Sorry about being such a bummer, but I knew you guys would understand. Maybe it's the hormones talking....

I'm sorry your going through this. I'm sure it's just hormones. I have never been through it but it sounds like it would be very normal to feel that way. Hugs.

  • My trip to MA ended with a trip to LD. I woke up Monday morning at 5:30 with contractions and immediately started drinking water and continued to lay down. I spoke with my dr around 7 and told him I was out of town and having consistent contractions any where between 2 and 10 min apart. He told me to continue to drink water and rest for an hour and if they didn't stop to go to the local hospital. Dh didn't come on the trip with us so my mom brought me to the hospital and when we got there my contractions were 2 min apart. I was also throwing up so they gave me an Iv with fluids. I ended up have a UTI and getting a shot to stop the contractions which finally stopped 3 hours after I got the shot. Dh ended up renting a car so he could drive dd and I back to NY and we went to my dr on Tuesday afternoon. My dr said everything looks fine and I am not dilated at all so just to take it easy until I start feeling better. He was also going to send my urine out to be tested.

I am still having some contractions and feel really achy but nothing like Monday. Dd and I were suppose to go to a 4th of July party today but we are staying home instead and relaxing. It would be too much chasing her around at a party. I'll be 32 weeks on Saturday and my next dr appointment is the 15th.

I hadn't thought about that yet, but I can certainly understand those feelings. I hope it gets a little better soon.

I had my 3rd trip to triage last night, but at least this time there seem to be some answers to the 20+ contractions I had in an hour....probable UTI (results will be in Friday).   I'm irritated because I just had my OB check-up Tues. and they did a urine sample then, so I don't know if they didn't have full results back yesterday or the infection showed up after that, but I'm starting the antibiotics either way and have only had 1 contraction so far today.   Other good news is the fFN was once again negative (which should get me past 33 weeks) and I was discharged on "activity as tolerated" so I'm not back on bedrest.   I also saw the MFM yesterday morning and LO is estimated at 4lb12oz, so about 2 weeks ahead.   Not that size equals maturity, but it does make me feel a little better if things were to suddenly start changing.

Thanks, L&R! I am glad that you are finally getting some answers and that your fFN test was negative. Also great to hear that you are no longer on bedrest. Let's keep those darn contractions away!

Great job growing, LO! Keep it up!

  • Hugs punky, I think it's normal to feel guilt over having a full term baby after a preemie, it makes you wonder what you did wrong the first time (the answer...absolutely nothing!).
  • Adamkel and L & R, glad you guys a hanging in there and everything is okay!

Update on me...I am so freaking frustrated and disappointed. I had my 39 week appointment today and I have no progress, not even the tiniest bit dilated, they won't strip my membranes because I am GBS positive (which makes sense, but had not occurred to me), and I feel like my VBAC hopes are flying right out the window...little dude has exactly five days to get his teeny butt in gear or I will end up with an RCS, which is absolutely devastating to me.

it seems so unfair...with Corri, I would have given anything to not go into labor, and now, at over 39 weeks, all I want is to go into labor and see if my body can do what it's supposed to, and nada. I am incredibly discouraged :-(.

Wow, how very scary. I'm so glad they were able to stop the contractions. I couldn't imagine being far from home with that happening either. Good call on resting too. Stay little baby! I hope the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful.

Adamkel and L & R, glad you guys a hanging in there and everything is okay!

There is still hope! Things can change so quickly. I'm rooting for you!

My update: baby boy is here, and came on his own before my scheduled RCS. I was in L&D Tuesday evening because I was feeling pinching feelings where I could imagine my cerclage being, and thought there was a possibility my water broke. I think it was my mucous plug, but nurse wanted to be sure. So I had the test done for that. While I was waiting for the results, I was having contractions, and during the peak of one, I felt a gush, and I was sure that now, indeed, my waters broke. The nurse came back to let me know the results, when I told her that I was sure that now my waters had broken. And sure enough they did. So baby boy got to pick his own birthday, and I had the c section that night. We're all doing well, home for a few days now. Baby boy was born at 38 weeks 5 days at 6lbs 2oz. Tiny. Only about a lb bigger than my early baby and was a month later!

I am so sorry that you are going through this! I felt exactly the same way when I had to get my CS because my body failed to go into labor with Max. However, there is still time so don't lose hope! I will be thinking of you and crossing fingers that you get the VBAC that you want.

Thanks! I honestly feel like a diick even whining about this because I am so happy that I made into term and honestly, still feel great (like I could honestly go two more weeks and feel okay), but it just feels like I am being cheated out of the birth experience I want for a second time. It was really hard to come to terms with having a c section last time, but I was okay this entire pregnancy knowing I would get to try for a VBAC, and I never imagined my body would just refuse to go into labor at the 11th hour!

  • So, list your first name, due date if you're pregnant or ttc timeline, preemie's name and gestational age at birth as well as the reason for their prematurity.

Hi! I'm Lauren.  I had my son via Cesarean at 33w5d in September 2011. I had an irritable uterus and a +FFN, so they gave me procardia to try and stop the contractions. This caused him to go into distress, and he was born. He spent 3w in the NICU. I am currently 4w5d, and researching for an HBAC.

Don't feel bad. I think we all have our ideas in our heads about how things should go and it's ok to feel disappointed when it doesn't go as planned. I know in the end that you will be happy about having your full term baby boy in your arms!Smile
