I'm sure this has been asked a million times, so sorry for the repeat
My almost 2 yo girls started daycare last august and had a really rough transition from the nanny to daycare but are so happy now and LOVE their teachers. On Aug 1 they will switch to a new room and a new teacher. They are starting to visit the classroom this month so the school has a plan in place but is there anything I should be doing at home? Anything I should be prepared for?
Re: Transitioning to new room at DC
I'm sure she will do great! The teachers will keep you updated during the transition. A month is a very long time to prepare. I never did anything at home. I guess you could always talk it up about the new teachers and the friends that have already moved.
If the drop off gets rough in the morning, bring a piece of fruit or snack as a distraction. My kids are very food motivated and this always helped.
Once they start visiting the new room I would start talking to them about the new teachers and new kids they are meeting/playing with. Keep it positive - "I heard you went into the big kid room today! Yay! I bet it was fun in there! Did they have any good toys you liked in there?" That sort of thing. The more we talk about new things or events/people our 2 year old is unsure of, the less likely she is to freak out.
When our DD transitioned out of the infant room, we would occasionally go say hi to the infant room teacher before going to the toddler room. For her, it almost seemed as though she was reassured knowing her teacher was near by. I don't know that it would work for all kids though. I was expecting it would have the opposite effect but for some reason it worked well for her.
Good luck! I bet they'll do great.
my son has transitioned several times and every time i was much more worried about it than i needed to be. He handled it fine every time. this last time he was skipping the room of a teacher he is really fond of, so I thought it might be a problem, but it was (again) no issue at all. He went from telling me "i have to go to Ms XXX's room!!" to "I'm in Ms YYYYYs" room instantly and didn't miss a beat.
good luck!
