Preemies

2+ weeks on bed rest in hospital

hi everyone, I've been in thehospital since the 18th of june, I am expecting twins, I came in at 24weeks, my cervical length is .5cm, this has been a rough time, never did I think I would be in this situation.  my due date isn't till Oct. dr's are hoping we make it to week 30.   I need to start preparing myself that my babies will probably be preemies....any words of advice from others going through this?

Re: 2+ weeks on bed rest in hospital

  • I knew my DS was going to be preemie just based on my health and the fact that I developed a gestational liver disease. I really just had to come to terms with the fact that a) he was going to be much earlier than I would have liked and b) I wouldn't be able to take him home right away because he was going to be in the NICU. I, however, was not prepared for how long his stay was going to be. But either way at least if you know now you can prepare yourself (or at least start trying to wrap your head around the idea) of whats ahead. It's not going to be easy, best of luck and happy and healthy thoughts to you and your LOs!

  • Meet with the neonatologists, tour the NICU.  Better to be prepared :). My cervix was a little longer than yours when I was admitted and we are now planning on a 36w induction, so anything can happen.  FX you have a lengthy, uneventful bed rest!

  • Do your best to take one day at a time.  There are very few elements of this process that you can control besides your response to it.  I had a rescue cerclage at @20 weeks for my DS, then 2 weeks of hospital bed rest and then 13 additional weeks of bedrest at home.  We made it to 35w6d!  It was so hard to not try to imagine every terrible scenario since we had had a 25 weeker for our first baby.   Believe me when I tell you the 14 weeks in the NICU with DD was far worse than the 15 weeks of bed rest with my DS.  Your job is to all that you can to relax, be well, and keep those babies in there.  Every day in the oven is several less days in the NICU.  Keep us posted, mama.

  • I am so sorry you're going through this. I had the similar thing happen to me: At 24 weeks I was admitted to the hospital for bed rest with a cervical length of .8 and 1 cm dilated. I very luckily was able to carry my baby until 31 weeks and ended up having a c-section due to a prolapsed cord.

My only advice: stay as positive as you can. It will help you stay sane will in the hospital. Meet with the neonatologist at every milestone. I meet with them at 24 wks, 28 wks, and 31 weeks. They'll let you know what to expect. If you're doctors allow it take a tour of the NICU. If you can't due to activity restrictions then maybe your partner can.

Also, if you can have friends or family come visit you every day have them bring you fun things (books, magazines, sudoku, what ever) and food. Hospital food nearly drove me to the brink. My husband and best friend took turns bringing me a cooler full of food to eat through out the day.

Denesdia said about bedrest being better then time in the NICU. The 3 months we spent in the NICU with my twins was horrible. Every week you're on bedrest is a week your baby isn't in the NICU. Or at least that is what my husband and I kept telling ourselves when we got really down about me being stuck in the hospital this pregnancy.

    Good luck!

  • I definitely agree with taking it one day at a time and taking a tour of the NICU. I was placed on SBR at 21 weeks for shortening of cervix and funneling. A couple of days later I had contractions and was hospitalized. Luckily, contractions stopped and funneling was controlled by Indocin so they sent me home to continue SBR. In my head, I was preparing myself for another preemie baby and was hoping to make it to at least 26 weeks. By 28 weeks, my cervix had shortened to .8cm so I was thinking that I would deliver soon. Somehow, I made it all the way to 39 weeks with almost no cervix. I should add that I was also on P17 shots with DD since DS was a 26 weeker.

What kept me going was starting to do cross stitching, trying to constantly stay positive, and setting smaller goals-like making it another week instead of looking at the total weeks I had to go. Bedrest was physically and emotionally draining for me, but it is a million times easier than going through the NICU roller coaster. The ladies on this board are extremely helpful and supportive. Take it one day at a time or you'll drive yourself crazy.

Like others have said, tour the Nicu, get to know the staff, ask ANY questions you can think of.

Consider each day a victory. I was told that everyday the baby (in your case babies) stay in utero, it takes approximately two days off the Nicu stay. I would celebrate each and every milestone.

Bedrest was the easiest part for me - I made friends with the nurses and they would come in and chat with me all the time. And I spent A LOT of time playing Candy Crush!
