Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Holy cow...no more binky.

Whoever said three days is all it takes to break a bink was lying through their teeth! :. My daughter's wubbanub broke on Friday so we decided just to start the weaning process then. We clipped the tip of the soothie part just a tad but she decided she didn't want it. She kept the animal part. Nap time and bedtime have been TORTURE since then. Screaming and screaming for over an hour....some days it's only a half hour and we have even had a couple times where it was 10 minutes. If we go in to try to calm her at all, the process just begins all over again as soon as we walk out the door. Yesterday she went from 5:30a until 7:45p without a wink of sleep because she wouldn't nap for the sitter. I'm at a loss because I feel like we are at a plateau and I wonder if she will ever fall asleep without crying again. Anyone deal with this? Thanks in advance! :

Re: Holy cow...no more binky.

  • While it took 2-3 days for my 8 month old to forget about the paci when we took it away, It takes much long with older babies to wean the paci. She will go to sleep easily eventually, but it may be a while. At this age, the paci is a complete comfort item- imagine someone taking something that means a lot to you- you wouldn't soon forget it. Their memory is so much better at this age. Keep working at it! So sorry it is so frustrating :(

  • We tried to take DS's away when he was 18months and could tell right away it wasn't going to go well.  I was due with DD anyday so we decided to wait.  By the time he was 2 he had no problem throwing it in the trash and saying bye-bye.

I'm just saying don't beat yourself up if you decide not to follow through right now, eventually it'll work out.

  • Same exact thing here. We started yesterday. 6:30 am to 9 pm with no nap. Up at 11 pm. Thankfully once we got her to sleep again she was good to 6 am. We are now working on a nap. 30 min in and no sleep yet.

  • We ended up just giving her a bink last night. She obviously wasn't ready to give it up. Looking back now, I'm not really sure why it was that big of an issue for me anyway. We were all much happier last night with that binky...and as I'm typing this, she is soundly sleeping for a nap :. Thanks all for your advice and good luck if you're trying to wean off the paci!
