I currently have a 21 pound 17 month old. I have a Jeep carrier, but it only does front and she tries to stand up on my legs so it doesn't make it very comfortable for me.
I honestly don't wear her much at this stage, but going on a vacation where I would like to do a little hiking. I am thinking a back carrier for her would be better?
I am looking at the Ergo, but open to suggestions. I figure it would also work well for baby #2. There are so many choices though, which one is best? Mostly I want it to be cool as we live in Florida.
Re: Need help picking a carrier
Also, if you want to try out lots of carriers, see if there is a baby wearing group near you. I'm near DC and occasionally attend babywearing international meetings. You can try on carriers for free, learn how to use them safely, and for 30 per year, rent out carriers for a month at a time. It's a great resource!
For a 17 month old you definitely want to do a back carry. DS still fits in our Ergo Sport fairly well - it's a bit more breathable than the original Ergo. It worked from about 4 months on for him. For a newborn, you need the newborn insert or to improvise one (swaddle + extra blanket under the bum to lift up baby).

For a nicer more premium carrier that is good in the heat, consider the Bloo Kangaroo Kanga Sport carrier, Kinderpack with comfort mesh or koolnit, or Onya Baby Outback carrier. A Tula carrier is great too but doesn't have a mesh option. If you plan to wear your child after he tops 25 pounds, it is absolutely worth paying for a premium carrier.
I am a pretty serious hiker. I carried my son over 10 miles on Sunday. I would much rather wear any of the packs above than a framed backpack carrier.
