Large-Chested Moms - Back Carriers?

I'm looking for a comfortable carrier for back carrying my 7 month old. I have a sleepy wrap and a ring sling which have worked great for me in the front and side carries. Now though, as she gets heavier and is getting super wiggly and grabby, I would like to carry her more on my back. I just attempted to wrap her using the sleepy wrap on my back following a you-tube video as I am not accustomed to it... oh my gosh my poor back is not happy. Plus, the stretchy fabric I know is probably not safe for that position. What back carriers have you used that are EASY to get on and comfortable to wear? She's about 20 lbs and I am a 38E. Any suggestions are appreciated!

  • I like to do back carries with my mei tai. You can also do back carries with your ring sling! You can look them up on youtube.

The mei-tai looks safe. Is it easy to get them into it for back carrying? I've tried moving her from the side more towards my back in the ring sling and she is a back-archer. Very wiggly. I can't get it tight enough on the top rail to feel like she's safely contained.

It is very safe. I tie the bottom part around my back and then slide the child from my hip to my back. I then pull up one strap and then the other. It does take practice, but she'll end up feeling very snug and secure. It will probably feel more secure than the ring sling. Oh and I am an h cup, the MT straps go around my shoulders like a back backpack, not interference with my chest. :)

DO NOT USE A STRETCHY WRAP FOR A BACK CARRY!!

Sorry for yelling. It is completely unsafe.  The sleepy wrap is not made for a back carry and honestly is probably not a good carrier for anything other than a newborn.... I can't believe you are still using it at all for a 20lb baby.

I would recommend a woven wrap if you really want to wrap, which is good b/c you can customize the fit (maybe a 4?).  I honestly really like my SSC for a back carry, though - either the Tula or another SSC (I have a wrap conversion that I love).

ETA: Back carries in ring slings are also tricky to learn to do correctly and only recommended for experienced baby wearers. I don't try them with my leg-straightener.  If you are really interested in wearing your LO on your back in a RS, I would find a local baby wearing group or consultant to get some in person help.

Yeah, I have gathered that the Sleepy Wrap is not good for back carrying. Honestly up until now I have been perfectly happy wearing her in it. I can get her nice and snug in it. The only problem is that she is so long, she gets in my way more in a front carry. She does start to get too heavy in it after about an hour or so. This is why I've been side-carrying her more in the ring sling lately. I'm really interested in back carrying to ease all of my wearing woes with her growing size. I'm thinking this mei tai may be the way to go for us on that end.

I'm pretty large chested too (40E) and I really like my Beco Gemini. I use it in the front carry right now since LO isn't large enough for back carrying, but I plan on using it that way when he is older since it is SUPER comfortable and distributes the weight really well.

I've used my RS and my MT for back carries, but at 7 months, DS was getting too heavy to use them comfortably for long periods. I use my Ergo (Performance) for back carries. He's light as a feather in it and the straps don't bother my Grand Tetons (hehe) at all. Smile

  • I love my boba 3G my little man is a wiggle worm and it keeps him very secure. It is also very easy on my back front carrying him, I do it for hours.

Eta: I am a 30F and my little guy is 10 months old and weighs about 22lbs.
