Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Blanket in crib?

My daughter has a small Taggies blanket that she loves to snuggle with. Sometimes we allow her to have it in the crib to help her fall asleep if we're there to supervise and then we take it out once she's asleep. We've also done the same thing if she wakes early in the morning and is having a hard time settling herself back down. I would love to be able to leave it in there with her overnight since it's such a comfort to her and would help her go back to sleep without us having to go in there, but I also don't want to do anything unsafe.

Is anyone else giving their babies small cuddle blankets like this yet? At what point would it be relatively safe to do so? At 5 months she's able to roll tummy to back (inconsistently) and can easily push up while she's on her tummy.

I wonder the same thing! My 4 month old had a fever and was unwell yesterday.  At night she was having trouble going back to sleep.  I gave her one of her mini blankets with the animal heads.  She rubbed in to her cheek, purrrrr'd and passed out.

Not sure if I'll keep giving it to her but it definitely made her feel better while sick!

  • I'm pretty paranoid about stuff like this, so I won't be putting any blankets or stuffed animals in the crib until she's about 1 year old (I believe that's the current recommendation).

I asked my pedi this question at our 6 month visit and he said that if DS was moving easily then it was ok to leave one small object.

He cautioned against leaving anything big and fluffy, leaving multiple items, or anything decorative.

  • Umm, maybe I'm a terrible mom but my baby sleeps with a blanket. It comforts him and keeps him warm. I'm not worried since whenever he moves and kicks, the blanket ends up by his feet.

Same here. DD is still in a bassinet in our room though if that makes any difference.

  • The only thing in his crib is a little rabbit he's had since the day he was born, and he falls asleep holding onto his ear. Since the NICU nurses let it in his bed, we did too. We put it at the other end of the crib when he's asleep.

  • Sadly, my LO will NOT fall asleep without grasping some type of blanket or material and holding it against his cheek. We haven't transitioned him into his crib yet, but I am already dreading it since I don't want to put a blanket in there! Right now he is sleeping in his swing and I tuck a homemade blanket with holes around his body. He sticks his fingers through it and holds it to his cheek. I'm thinking I may give him a spit up rag to hold onto in his crib. Ugh!!
