We started Ferber yesterday with nap time and bedtime. It hasn't been bad, except that DS is now only napping about 30 minutes (he used to sleep for an hour or hour and a half when I would hold him for naps...horrible habit, I know! ??) I knew he would be tired, but just hoped that it would make bedtime easier and he'd sleep good tonight. This afternoon, he slept for 30 minutes and woke up fussing. I went in and picked him up because I figured he was done napping. He ate, fell asleep, and has been asleep (passed out asleep) on my chest for an hour and a half. I just don't have the heart to put him down and wake him up when he's obviously exhausted. So, my question is when your LOs wake up from naps crying, do you go check at intervals like at night and for how long would you keep doing so before abandoning the nap?
Re: Naps
When I did nap training, I could only do 1 nap a day. Just like your DS, my son would wake up after 20-30 minutes crying. I've tried letting him cry and see if he'd go back to sleep, but it never worked. After a few times of that, I just went in to get him up when he woke up at the 20 min mark. Because I knew he was still tired, I let him nap on me or in the car seat for the other naps of the day, so he would at least get some sleep (like your DS, mine could nap for 2+ hrs on me or in the car seat).
The GOOD news is that it gets better! Before long, DS's naps went from 20 minutes to 30 minutes, then to 45 minutes. Within 2 wks, he was napping even over an hour. I could not believe it. ONce he started napping longer, I put him in his crib for other naps as well.
Hang in there and GL!
