First Birthday Coming soon....ideas?

So I have a little girl and my sister has a boy, both close in age. they will be turning a year soon but I'm not really sure what to do or get for a first birthday. I would be very grateful for suggestions.

    For 1 year olds I would recommend anything from the Fisher Price Little People line.  They have Diney characters, cars, castles, animals-all sorts and sizes (and price range) of toys in the line to play with. My oldest started playing with them at 14 months and now at 4 yrs old still uses his characters in elaborate pretend play. As far as a party, I suggest keeping it small and family as your children won't remember anyways.  The norm seems to be to get a "smash cake"- basically a small cake/cupcake that your child can smash and maybe get a little in their mouth.  Makes for cute pics.  Congratulations!

    My nephews first birthday is next month and I'm getting him the Radio Flyer wagon from Wal Mart. Its so cute, has two seats and even cupholders!

    Water and or sand tables?

    The Little People line is a total bust in this house. DD could not be less interested in that stupid house. I don't know if it's because she has access to the one I had as a child- where she can actually move the furniture around and such- but she played with the one that was gifted to her at 1 year once. 

    Are they walking? DD had a M&D pull frog that she LOVED at that age. 

    Otherwise I would just stick with money for their college funds. No one year old needs a ton of toys.
