Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swaddling at 3 Months

When exactly do I need to worry about weaning DS from swaddling? He is 3 months and loves to be swaddled for bed. He is now requiring it for naps where he used to just fall asleep in his bouncer. DS1 hated being swaddled so I never had to deal with this before. How many months can I go before he needs to be weaned from swaddling?

TIA :

Re: Swaddling at 3 Months

  • The first time DD rolled back to tummy, we were done with the swaddle. She was 16 weeks. I think the roll was a fluke, but I wasn't willing to risk it.

This, only she did it WHILE being swaddled. Scared me half to death.  We use Magic Merlin Suit now, works fine.

I'd swaddle until they're rolling, then stop or find a swaddle transition like we did. I tried to wean cold turkey and didn't work the week before she rolled.

  • If your LO is begining to roll, you could still swaddle their body and leave out their arms.  It still gives them the feeling of being snug, but would leave their arms out incase their needed!

  • We still are. He just rolled tummy to back the other day but hasn't rolled back to tummy yet so, waiting. I do not swaddle him for naps and he doesn't nap well but I'm trying to get him used to it. If I hold him he does ok but occasionally he will do the flailing arm thing and whack himself in the face and wake himself up. That's the problem.

  • I stopped the other day when DS rolled over while swaddled (I was standing right there and had just put him in the crib).  Right now, we are doing one arm out to get him adjusted.  Once he's doing well with that (probably in another day or two), we'll do both arms out but still wrap his belly. Then, we'll do that for a few days and then just put him in the sleep sack.
  • i tried at 3 months and he wasn't ready yet.  he would fuss and move his arms all around. now at 3 months and 3 weeks we are doing the one arm out and its going well.  he doesn't even seem to notice the difference. then we are going for 2 arms out, and then i guess we will try a sleep sack or just have him sleep in a pj outfit.

  • OP I'm in the same boat and could have written that post.

We experimented with unswaddling cold turkey last night b/c our power was out (no a/c or fans) and his room was too hot for him to be swaddled. Yeah, it was miserable. I swaddled him when the power came back on at 1130. I'm sure he'll adjust when we have to do it, but I'm going to hold out until he at least is rolling.

  • Thanks so much ladies for the input. He doesn't seem close to rolling over yet but feel like it will get to that point soon. I think whatever way we go about it, it's going to be a miserable few nights.

  • It's important to stop when your baby shows signs of rolling over or breaking loose.  This often happens around 3-4 months.  We stopped swaddling DS1 at 3.5 months and DS2 at over 4 months.  At that point, we weaned gradually, first with one arm out, then both, then a Halo sleepsack.  I found the sleepsack to really help with the transition by providing some snugness and confinement, while also replace the sleep signal that swaddling had been.
