Natural Birth

Birth Center Orientation

We just had our birth center orientation this evening, and I have to say I'm in love with the place.  The MW who gave the orientation seemed great (one of 7 at the center, I think), the center's standard procedures were just what we're looking for, and the birthing rooms were beautiful, cozy, and had awesome Jacuzzi tubs!

I have a history of Pre-eclampsia, so I asked how my care would be handled in that situation and was pleasantly surprised to find that I could still receive MW care, I would just deliver at the hospital rather than the center (not ideal, but better than I was expecting).

The only downside is that they don't do water births.  They have awesome tubs that you can labor in, but they don't have a protocol in place to allow for birthing in the tubs.  It's disappointing to me b/c I would have loved a water birth, but the birth center still seems to be my best option for natural birth in this area.

Just wanted to share my enthusiasm with some ladies who I know will understand!

Re: Birth Center Orientation

  • That's great that you've found a birthing canter and MW that you like and are comfortable with! I'm a FTM and totally fell in love with the birthing center we go to now. Congrats!

  • That is great! I am so sad that there are no birth centers in my area :(. I'll be delivering in a hospital with a MW.

I'm glad you're happy with the center! So are you still able to deliver there as long as you don't develop pree this time around?
I delivered in a hospital last time because it was my only option with my insurance and where I lived. They were not very NB friendly I think I was the first NB in months and I couldn't labor in the shower or even get out of bed. I really wanted a water birth and was disappointed, but in the end I was still able to do it. It definitely helped staying home as long as possible so I was only in the hospital for 2 hours before my daughter was born.
This time around I'm able to go to a birth center that is only 15 minutes from my house! It's beautiful and I can deliver in the tub. I'm so psyched for birth this time around. :

I have my first appt next week, and they'll take my history and determine if I am low risk enough to deliver at the birth center at that time. From initial conversations, it does sound like as long as my BP stays low, I can deliver at the birth center.

The hospitals around here don't sound very natural birth friendly either so I'm psyched to have the birth center as an option. Best of luck on your birth!
