Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Milk and solids

How often do you feed your 7 month old? I am not sure if I have the right ratio of milk to solids. Including the overnight wakings she is nursing 7 times. Some of those are comfort nurses I believe. I recently started nursing after 6 months of pumping. I can't feel the difference between nursing and comfort sucking. I also never hear my DD swallow. She eats 3 meals a day which are 4 oz jars of food. Does this sound right?

Re: Milk and solids

  • I think that sounds about right. I know it can vary but my LO is 6 months and nurses about 8 times a day and is only on one solid at dinner right now but the pedi said we can eventually add more in. I think by 7 months she will be on at least 2 times a day. Although those jars sound large (our pedi said the jars should be about 2 oz). I think as long as you are mainly nursing first then offering a solid about a hour later then LO can eat as much as she wants.

  • In terms of nursing frequency, that sounds about right.  It may take a little practice to figure out what your DD's swallowing sounds like.  DS doesn't comfort nurse much... When he's done, he pulls off. Or if he nurses before a nap, he'll doze off.  If you aren't entirely sure about the swallowing part, you may want to find a BF support group in your area and just stop by.  There are many in my area and they're free, and headed by a lactation consultant. They are there to help and can help you figure out what swallowing sounds like.

in terms of solids, DS does mostly BLW so it's hard to quantify, but I don't think he eats 4oz three times a day.  We do 3 solids meals but I don't think he eats that much.

  • Sounds like a lot of solids but I know the recommendations vary. I was told just a few tablespoons a day and that "food before 1 is just for fun." She should be taking in about as much milk as she was before with solids on top of that but I'm no food expert! I'd ask your doctor. DD still nurses often, including at least 2 times a night.
  • Are you sure the jars are 4 oz?  2 oz sounds more normal.

My almost 6 month old only nurses 5-6 times a day, with one solids meal around dinner. I'll move up to 2 by 7 months, but I think her doctor wants her on 3 meals. We'll see how it goes, right now she only has an oz or so.

I question the size of the jars also. Most baby food jars I have seen are 2 to 2.5 ounces. I've seen some pouches that are 3 ounces.

I think her milk intake sounds about right. Offering solids 3 times a day also sounds okay. I just question whether the jars are actually 4 oz.

All of the jars I have are 4 oz jars both for stage 1 and stage 2 foods, and the pouches I have are 3.5 oz.
OP, my 6 month old eats a 4 oz jar of food twice a day plus some cereal, and normal takes 6 6oz bottles a day. Just saw the pedi this morning and she was happy with his eating habits. Hope that helps!
