Feedback Please

I overheard SD(14) the other day while she was playing with the baby. She was telling the LO to call her Mama. I was definitely concerned about this. I told DH and he spoke with her about it and she said she was just playing around. But, later on I heard her telling her friend that she knew she could totally be a mom.

Am I over reacting or is their a real resaon to be concerned about this?

  • Depends. Are you freaked out about her getting pregnant so that she can be a mom? Or are you upset that she was playing mom with your baby? And I don't know how upset you are to gauge whether you are actually over reacting?

  • I would be concerned, personally. I would talk to her about how when she's grown up and can support herself that it will be great to be a mom, but discuss how much responsibility motherhood entails and how she's not ready for it financially, emotionally, etc.

This. It sort of sounds like the former, but I can't really tell. And my reaction would really depend on her personality. At 14 I babysat all the time and definitely knew I wanted to be a mom *someday*, so it could just be something like that.

  • Here's a thought, the two incidents could be totally separate from each other.

Playing Mommy is not unusual, even in a 14 yo.  SO unless she was telling the baby that "SHE WAS ITS MAMA AND YOU WERE NOT" and/or stepping in front of YOU to parent the baby when you are around, getting upset or even having your DH talk to her may have been a bit overdramatic.

As for the other comment to her buddy.  Was that BEFORE or AFTER your husband talked to her.  Because I can easily see her bitching to her friend about how overdramtic her parents are and how mean they were to her and how "she could be just as good of a parent as they are".

So yeah....this is something I would keep in the back of my mind, but not jump all over.
