Toddlers: 24 Months+

How much is too much?

My daughter has a variety of issues: Cerebral Palsy, Trach and Feeding Tube, to name the top three. In September, she'll have reconstructive surgery on her airway and the trach will be removed. Afterwards, she'll spend a month in the hospital recovering.

At the same time, we will be remodeling our house to accommodate her first wheelchair, which will arrive around the time of her homecoming.

And since we will be, essentially, packing up our entire house for this remodel, we thought we would go ahead and move DD's room so she can get to her room using her wheelchair; her current room is not as accessible.

So, picture this... In a span of one month, DD will undergo a major surgery, have a major part of her current anatomy removed, and come home to a 'new' house and new room.

Now, for my question, DD is still in a crib. I would like to move her to a toddler bed when she comes home. But, I am worried that with all the changes that will be happening, that will be one change too many. My daughter is typical when it comes to her social and cognitive sills. So, would you just bite the bullet and set up the toddler bed? Or, would you wait? Moving to a toddler bed before surgery is not an option.

TIA!

  • I would wait on the crib.  Sounds like a lot of change as it is.  I was thinking if she's in a regular bed at the hospital, then it might be easier to switch, but it might also make he associate her new bed with the hospital.

  • I'd set up her new room to look as much like her old room as possible and keep the crib for now.  That's a lot of changes and she'll probably need the comfort of the familiar when she gets home from her hospital time.  That's just based on how I would handle it with my son and he's pretty adaptable. I'm a worrier about that kind of stuff though!

  • Will she be in a bed or crib in the hospital? If she'll be in a bed for a month anyway, I see no reason to put her in a crib at home... that would almost be like another change
