Trying to Get Pregnant

Fertility Friend's Ovulation Prediction

This is our second month of trying and I have yet to buy a BBT or an OPK, but I am just now starting with FF. AF paid me a visit yesterday and I was surprised to see that just after one cycle, FF gave me some fertility/ovulation predictions.

I know it's just based off my cycle and whatnot, but it's definitely a different set of days than the stupid Bump ovulation calendar gives me or any other "enter your last period date here!" mess. Does anyone know how accurate it is?

I know the best way to learn when I O is to temp and chart CM, but I was just curious if FF gives you a prediction, even if you're entering your temps/cm. Is it right on the days you O? Or is it totally off? I know you can O later in your cycle than you think and sometimes not O at all, so I wouldn't place money on FF's predictions, I just thought it was a nice guideline to have.

(Still gonna jump my husband EOD and chug some green tea, though. Will most likely buy a BBT this weekend.)

ETA: What brand of BBT do you guys like/use? Amazon has one by Nexcare on sale and it has some pretty happy reviews. Should I splurge for the digital to be more accurate (And by splurge I mean two more dollars so I answered my own question.)? Also - OPKs? Wondfo is what I keep hearing about, so yes on those too? Thanks, ladies!

No.  If I hadn't been using an OPK from Kroger this month, I would have thought my O had passed.  I ended up getting the typical CM and positive OPK two days after FF said I would.

October 2013: Endo erosion/ Clear HSG

March 2014: SA #1/  2%morph, borderline sperm count, decent motility

June 2014: SA#2/  2% morph, low sperm count, worse motility

  • After several cycles of charting, FF can get a little more accurate, but as the saying goes - your cycle is normal until it's not and even FF can't predict that.

Ooh gotcha! Good thing for the OPK, huh? Thank you!

I need that embroidered on a pillow: Your cycle is normal until it's not.

    Thank you!

FF just goes off of an average of cycles you have previously entered. Since you only have one cycle it is going off of that. For me, FF now does not give me predictions and has me labeled as an irregular cycle.

If you are rarely regular I would imagine there predictions would be pretty close.

I like my mabis BBT and wondfo OPKs.

Gotcha. Without sounding like a total dope, what is considered "irregular"? I consider myself regular, even if I'm one to two days off of my expected AF. Is irregular a bigger stretch? Like past a 35 day cycle or something? Curious about that.

Thanks for your help and your recommendations!

  • This is my second but first full cycle using FF and so far their O prediction hasn't been accurate it says next Friday but looks like I'm gearing up to O in the next couple of days. I second Mabis bbt and wondfo opks. You can always buy a couple of digitals to back up your peak day but wondfos have worked just fine for me.

My cycles have ranged from 32-54 days.

1-2 days wouldn't be irregular. I wouldn't consider anything within 5 days (either ways) of your normal length irregular.  I'm not sure what the technical 'rule' is though.

    Okay, that makes sense! Thanks!

  • I think if you just put in the dates of when your previous period and your current period started, FF will just assume you will ovulate midway through the cycle and make predictions off of that.  Of course, you could ovulate sooner or later. Once you start temping, FF will revise your calender to show you your actual ovulation date and fertile window (but you won't know until after O has already happened most likely).  Doing the OPKs can give you a heads up right before you're about to O.  But if you HIO every other day you should be ok regardless, I would think.  And I also assume FF relies more on when you have a sustained thermal shift to pinpoint O, but it's nice if the OPKs and CM line up (they won't always though).

I am using the NexCare digital BBT from Amazon but it reads only to the tenths place.  That seems to be working well for me - I have a clear temp shift so far.  However, other people seem to like the Mabis one from Walmart, which reads out to the hundredths place. Either way.

Sorry it didn't work out this cycle, but good luck with the next one!

ETA: certainly your O date could change from month to month, so unless you are like clockwork, then expect the predictions could be a bit off

Definitely get the digital. I got one that records the last temp, so I can go back to sleep and check it when I really wake up and record it.
  • They all gave you great advice on ovulation and FF. I just wanted to add that I have the Mabis BBT from Walmart.

  • FF is a great tool to use, especially for me to be able to see that I did in fact ovulate with my temping.  I still cross check everything myself and by that I mean, I use OPK's every cycle, I watch my cm, I temp...  It is going to get you the best result the longer you use it.  It is telling me that this month I should have AF at 21 days instead of 28 like usual because I O'd earlier than usual.  So make sure you keep track of everything...  But bottom line is that it's going to get close, but its still just an app.  Good luck!!

TTC Since October 2012.  I’m 27 and DH is 30

DH: 4 SAs, all came back normal, blood testing 6/13-9/13 all normal

Me: 03/13 irregular cycles, hypothyroidism diagnosis

3/13 full blood panel showed normal results except thyroid

5/13 regulated hypothyroidism, regular cycles again

6/13 day 21-24 blood testing came back normal

6/13-9/13 DH testing with Urologist- normal

11/13 ultrasounds and full hormonal blood panel were normal

12/13 OB consult, day 3 blood tests and HSG ordered

01/14 HSG results normal, day 3 blood tests are normal

Just hoping that AF will back off and give me a chance to take a pregnancy test! All are Welcome!!

ETA: What brand of BBT do you guys like/use? I used Mabis from Walmart.  After my second Mabis died, I ended up using a regular thermometer for awhile.  Both worked fine for me.  Amazon has one by Nexcare on sale and it has some pretty happy reviews. Should I splurge for the digital to be more accurate (And by splurge I mean two more dollars so I answered my own question.)? I would use a digital.  There was no way I would be awake enough at 5:00 am to read a non digital thermometer. Also - OPKs? Wondfo is what I keep hearing about, so yes on those too? I never had a problem with Wondfo OPKs (I did have an issue with the knock off Wanfu though.  They never turned +, even when I got a + digital OPK).  A few cycles I confirmed + Wondfos with digi OPKs.  It wasn't really necessary, but I liked seeing the smiley face.  Thanks, ladies!
