Babies: 3 - 6 Months

A follow up to CIO question

After reading the post below, I had a follow up question re CIO.

Which stage of sleep do you use CIO? DD is 5 mos and I'm preparing to try it in the next few weeks (reading Ferber now). She puts her self to sleep at naps and bedtime just fine, it's the MOTN where we have to frequently give her paci back and attempt to delay nursing (she would nurse all night if we let her).

Question: which point to I use CIO? For each MOTN waking, even though she still eats 1-2 a night?

Our LO still eats once a night sometimes, so if she wakes and doesn't resettle herself in a minute or 2, I go in to see if she is hungry, if she is, I nurse her and put her back down awake and then start the intervals. To be honest though, since we have started it, she pretty much SSTN until around 5:30am, then nurses and goes back to sleep.

  • We have exactly the same issue.  Naps fine, goes to bed time no problem, but he just can't seem to put himself to sleep in the MOTN.  He used to do it just fine, but since the wakefuls he just can't figure it out.  What book do you have?  Maybe I should start reading.

  • Ferber has a section on night weaning. At 5 months she's likely still hungry in the middle of the night, so I'd probably nurse for the first waking and then try Ferber's method to delay the later ones.

I have several since this is my 2nd, but am only just reading Ferber's Solving A Child's Sleep Problems. Never needed any form of CIO with my first, but DD is a whole other story. She is proving every sleep book thus far a FAIL!
