Babies: 9 - 12 Months

how many hours a day do you let your baby sleep

my LO is 10 months old and she sleeps for 3 hours a day which seems to be good for her but everyone is telling me she should sleep 2 to 2 and half at most. should I reduce it or just let her sleep for 3 hours.

  • let her sleep as much as she wants.  She sleeps what she needs. Every kid is different.  That's when they do their growing.

  • let her sleep.  I never wake LO unless absolutely necessary.  3 hours of naps is not excessive. FWIW, my almost 4 yo still takes 3-4 hour naps.  He's a monster if he doesnt get enough sleep. Everyone's sleep needs are different. Enjoy the break!

  • I'd say make sure she / he is sleeping well at night - and then if so - do not limit naps.. it would vary for every child.

    Ditto that.

My LO sleeps about 11 hours a night and then on a good day, he takes two 1.5 hour naps.  Then there are other days that he naps more or naps less.  As long as his naps don't affect him going to sleep on time and he sleeps through the night, I consider it good.

  • I feel like whoever said that must not have kids ;)

Seriously, though, I just asked my pediatrician about how much sleep is normal, because LO sleeps a ton (12 hrs at night, and about 4 hours wroth of naps every day). I wasn't concerned, just curious if he was in the normal range. She said at this age anything from 12-16 hours is normal. If it's significinatly more than that, there could be some underlying issues (thyroid problems or sleep apnea), and if most of it is during the day it would be problematic, but if it isn't interrupting nighttime sleep, enjoy the naps.

  • Lol, what...two hours a day?!

She should be taking two long naps. DS naps for two hours, twice.

Let her sleep as much as she wants to. There is no quota she can't exceed.

ETA: DS STTN and has since he was 4ish months old, so that has no bearing on naptime. Sleep begets sleep and all that.

    Between one and three.
  • My son takes 2 naps a day and they are usually 1.5 to 2 hours each. So he gets 3 to 4 hours daytime sleep every day. He gets about 10 to 10.5 hours at night.

  • Alright. Thanks all. I'll let her sleep. I have no problem with that lol.

  • I let DD sleep as much as she wants.  She sleeps through the night, but her naps during the day are either hard to come by or nonexistent.
