I applied for daycare assistance from the state. We can afford daycare, but we'd be scraping by once SO's student loans start going into repayment in two months.
I put SO on the application because I didn't want to commit welfare fraud...because I'm a productive, honest member of society, and by law, I was supposed to because he lives in this house. I explained in the comments why we were applying, that we only needed assistance for 3 months, and we didn't even require full assistance.
I got a denial letter in the mail. When I called the worker to ask why, she said it was due to our combined salaries and that I should have left SO off the application since we weren't married because then I probably would have qualified.
So, for being an honest, working, member of society with more than a "baby daddy," I'm punished. But, a girl I work with who 5 kids by 4 BDs at 27 years old, who works one day every two weeks, doesn't go to school, and lives in her house Section-8 approved house, gets full assistance in every which way; over $1,000 a month in cash, groceries, and mortgage assistance.
BULLSHITT.
It's so discouraging. I mean, we both bust our assez, work, go to school, have our own apartment, cars, etc. We're not begging the state for money left and right. We just need some help for a few months. We're good people, do what we're supposed to do, and ugh.Why would I try to do something with my life when I could sit on my asss and let everyone else pay for me to live?

Re: Frustrated.
This, this, this! I would owe a couple thousand per month if it weren't for IBR. I am lucky enough to only have federal loans do my entire student loan debt is covered. Based on income and family size.
I'm a huge proponent of this; it was very unfortunate how few of my grad school peers had heard of IBR. And when I told them, they shrugged it off.

I agree, check out IBR! Hopefully that will help you all out at least as much as the CCA could have.
