Eating too much? (Longish)

Someone's post below got me thinking about how much J's consuming while I'm at work. I only work part time (5 hours, 3 days per week). He wakes up between 6:30-7:30 and I nurse him as long as he wants. I head to work and in the 5 hours that I'm gone he usually eats 2 bottles that are 6-7 oz each (so a total of 12-14 oz in 5 hours).

I actually can't keep up with him because while I'm at work I usually only get 5-7oz. Luckily, since I only work part time I can usually stock up the days I'm off and cover him but my "stash" is wiped by the end of my work week.

On top of this, a few weeks ago he started ABSOLUTELY refusing to nurse in the late evening. I just couldn't take it anymore so I resorted to giving him bottle for that last session. He eats almost 8 oz during that feeding! If I try to takes the bottle away before he's done he screams like he's on fire.

Honestly, I didn't think much of any of this. I just thought I had an under supply. Reading the posts from the other ladies about how much their babies eat made me realize that my kid is a pig!

I hate to ask a question like this but is it normal for him to eat that much? How can I ever keep up with that?

Help?

Im gone for 4hrs one day a week and Depending on her nap that day she'll take in 4 to 8oz of pumped BM in that time. A few times she's actually napped 3hrs and didn't have any bottles.

  • The kellymom website recommends an ounce an hour for when you are away from baby. They say that if you give more your baby will drink it but you are over feeding and will possibly create a problem with your breastfeeding relationship as it would be hard to keep up with what you are feeding him while away.  I'm not sure how you would go about correcting the problem or cutting back on the ounces given without him freaking out. Maybe try smaller amounts (1-2 ounces) more often rather than giving one bigger bottle. Take breaks while feeding and burp him in between. It's supposed to take about 20 minutes to feed the bottle. Supposedly the longer it takes to feed the bottle the more baby will realize he's full.
