Ugh... Insurance Vent

A couple months ago I called to see if our insurance covered a breast pump, and the guy said yes, as long as I have a prescription and it is under $2000.  I thought that was pretty awesome.  Well, today when I called to find out where to buy one since I have the Rx, they said it is only covered if baby and I are separated- as in I get discharged from the hospital before her or vice versa.  Going back to work does not count as separation. I even called back and talked to a different person and she said the same thing.  AGGGGHHHHH. So bummed.  Apparently this has been the policy for awhile now.

Maybe I'm super crazy, but I don't know how I got the whole under $2000 thing. So confused.

Ladies, call your insurance to double check, these people are crazy! Or at least I am!

Re: Ugh... Insurance Vent

  • You might want to double check because I was under the impression that as of July 1st, insurance companies must provide a pump or assistance towards one. That's what my pharmacist told me...perhaps it's just my state.

  • I would call again and speak with someone else. I was given a different answer each time I contacted my insurance company. Mine ended up covering a double electric pump 100%.

I hope you get your pump covered!

Pretty sure this isn't across the board yet/doesn't include grandfathered plans.

Most policies cover them now, but grandfathered policies are exempt.

This is my understanding as well.  I called my insurance several times (was crossing my fingers I could find someone to give me good news) and after some additional research, etc learned that grandfathered plans still don't have to be covered, but this ends Jan 2014 (so no plans can be grandfathered any more).  A bit too late for me (I will go back to work in November), but maybe for some of us with July babies and Yay!  for future moms, but not for me

    :-(

I called to double check mine, it's effective as of January first through mine because that's when our plan reups. They also won't provide it late, because baby will already be here. Lame.
  • as of July 1st it's mandatory for insurance companies to cover breast pumps call back and ask for a supervisor
  • I called mine today. I have Anthem and it should be in the mail and on the way soon. Mine covered 100 percent and I ordered the Medela double. I hope the person you spoke with was wrong! I figure as much as I pay a month for insurance I should take full advantage.

This. The policy through my employer will partially cover a pump under certain situations, but the policy through DH's employer will not cover a pump or LC at all. Strange since his employer's policy is super awesome, and my policy usually sucks.
  • Maybe I'll call again.  I don't think it should be grandfathered in since DH's company changed providers in May of this year.  It's usually a pretty good plan so I was surprised too!

You might want to call again because with all of the changes in the laws and policies recently I found that not all of the insurance representatives know what they are talking about. I called one time, and the lady I talked to said I needed my doctor to do an electronic preauthorization if I wanted a breast pump indicating the reason I needed it. This seemed wrong to me based on a recent press release on my insurance company's website saying that breast pumps are now covered 100 percent if purchased from an approved durable medical equipment supplier. Also, when I asked my doctor's office about doing the electronic preauthorization, they had no idea what I was talking about, saying they have only ever written letters to insurance companies regarding the need for a breast pump. I decided to call back, and the lady I talked to that time actually knew what she was talking about. She gave me the name of an approved supplier, and I called them to order the pump. I received it about four days later, and according to my insurance company's website, they already paid the supplier for the claim.
