So, DD has had some diarrhea the last 5 days or so. I think it was either raspberries or French toast that did it. It just won't go away. She's eating bland foods and yogurt, but it isn't getting better. I feel awful because it has made some diaper rash flare up and she cries at each change.
Excited, I think you had this issue. What helped?
Re: Diarrhea issues. Excited (and others)...help!
Aww poor Claire!!! Sorry to hear she's having such a tough time of it!
For the rash, the only time DS has had diarrhea was because of strong antibiotics to kill a particularly stubborn ear infection. What I found helped best with the rash was letting him air dry completely at each change, coating him in Maalox (weird, I know, but I swear it worked), letting that dry completely, then coating him in Vaseline. The Maalox helps to cut the acid before it hits and burns the skin and the Vaseline helps create a barrier.
Also, if it's sunny where you live, take her into the backyard and let her lay diaperless with her bum towards the sun for ten min or so. Again, sounds weird but it definitely helped.
Once the diarrhea is gone, then you can treat with Desitin or your diaper cream of choice, but the rash won't heal until the diarrhea is gone. Once the diarrhea was done, DS' rash cleared up in just a couple of days. I used Neosporin on the really raw spots as well, so if she has any of those, that might help.
For the diarrhea, the only things that eased it for us before the course of antibiotics ended were giving at least 2 servings of yogurt every day and avoiding anything acidic (I swear the poor kid must have been so sick of bananas, toast and chicken!).
Hope this helps and she feels better soon!
Thank you, everyone! I have some Culturelle kids probiotic from when she was on an antibiotic. I just put that in her milk this morning so we will see how that goes. She only had two diarrhea diapers yesterday as opposed to her usual 4 since this happened so maybe we are turning a corner. I'm going to try to limit her milk intake, too. I didn't realize that could aggravate the rash.
It's been super sunny and warm here so we will try some nakey baby time, too!
Woo hoo! Right after I typed the above, we had a solid poop! I'm going to continue the probiotic for a little anyway.
Kmhunt...I can't believe your poor DD had it for a year! That stinks!
