Is it worth the money?

My hubby and I both have iPhone 4S. It has an okay camera and video but not great. I like to take pics of everything so I was wondering if we should get a real camera or camcorder for when baby comes. Sometimes my picture turns out fuzzy when I zoom in and I don't want a whole lot of baby pics messed up. I could save money and deal since both are already on my phone but do I want better quality? I'm very indecisive about this. What would you do?

Re: Is it worth the money?

  • I also have an iPhone and love to take pictures of everything....however if you want to print pictures it's best that you do it from a camara. We printed some pictures last week for our album and pictures weren't so great it was a bummer so were buying a camara for when the baby is here.

  • I have the iphone 5 and still prefer to take pictures on my actual camera.  Digital cameras really aren't that expensive, and most function with both picture taking and video taking capability, so I would skip the camcorder and just get a camera.  Best Buy has great deals, I believe I got my Sony Cybershot for around $139.

  • The thing is you'd have to have it with you wherever you go. If you're somewhat of a photographer then it is worth it to have a real, fancy camera, but otherwise there is no real point if you have a decent one on your phone, which you do with that phone.

This too, I have several pictures that looked fine on my phone but terrible when I tried printing them to frame.

  • I'd get a real camera. It could just be because I'm technologically challenged, but I would think it would be a lot harder to save those pictures that you want to keep forever if they're on your phone vs. a memory card and transferred to your computer. Plus, cameras have a lot more features (better zoom, different picture modes, etc).

The camera we have is nothing fancy, but you can also record video, which is nice. It was less than $200 with all the accessories and everything included. Costco seems to have some good deals, if you have one near you.

  • I would get a camera, you can never get those moments back and I know several people that have lost their phones and lost all their babies first pictures. I know I am way more likely to leave my phone somewhere than my camera
  • Well I personally would recommend getting a camera....but I think it depends on what you plan on taking pictures of in the future as well. We have a family of boys and are very active and my son loves playing sports. We decided it was worth the investment to purchase a nice camera so we can capture action shots. It can be a pain to lug around at times but to me it's worth it to have the better pictures.

  • Thanks everyone , I appreciate the feedback
  • I'd get a camera. Its worth it in the long run for quality and ease of printing. But not a video camera. We got a mini DVD one and used it but never watch the vids because they're hard to upload and expensive to convert to regular DVDs.
  • You could get the iPhone 5. The camera is better. Are you eligible for an upgrade at all?
  • I have an iPhone, point & shoot digital camera and a DSLR. I use all three on a regular basis, depending on what kind of event it is.

I personally can't imagine only having my phone to take pictures, especially once LO starts being more mobile & active. You need that faster shutter speed on a real camera for that.

  • For those that are saying that you could lose  your phone and your pics too, Dropbox is a great backup for that.  I downloaded Dropbox on my phone and my computer and whenever I take a picture on my phone it automatically syncs to Dropbox so I can access it anywhere and never lose anything.

  • I personally would invest in a digital camera. I keep mine in my purse in a carrying case which makes it just as convenient as a phone. Its solely up to you though

That's a nice feature to have. I have something similar with my iPhone and iCloud. Anything that I take on my phone automatically syncs up with my Macbook and my iMac.

  • I got DH a fancy camera for Father's Day and he's been having a blast with it. His late father took lots of pics and I know he wanted to keep up the tradition. We have iPhones but there's a huge difference in quality. The action on it is very fast, which will be good for capturing LO's moments. I asked a lot of people for advice on what to get and including case, cleaning kit, memory card and camera, it came to under 1,000.
  • If you have the money I would splurge on a new camera, you're going to want to take tons of pictures as the months go by and if you're anything like me I have a hard time removing the photos from my iPhone which results in the capacity being full often, with a camera you can change the memory card and it won't affect your phone storage. I use my camera on my phone a lot but we've been thinking about getting a small little camera, maybe 80 to 150 dollars.. Depending what we can find for our budget.

If you'll be eligible for an upgrade in the next 6 or so months, hold out for the iphone 5S. It'll come out in the next 6 months and the camera and video is even better than the 5. Honestly, if you're going to buy a digital camera in the 100 to 200 range, such as a Coolpix, the 5S camera will be just as good as those.
  • I have an IPhone and a digital camera... I never, ever remember to take my camera anywhere. It's so much more convenient to use your phone for day to day moments you want to capture. It won't hurt to have a real camera for special occasions and such, but just know it may not get used much. There's also some nice photo editing apps for the iPhone that can help you get nicer looking photos.
