Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Ferber

I have two questions for you, ladies!

1.  When doing Ferber at nap time, how long did you let your LO go before giving on the nap? I'm thinking 30 minutes before I call it quits.

2.   Do you rock/snuggle/whatever your LO until they are drowsy then put them down? I've always rocked DS until he fell asleep, which I'm trying to break him of obviously, but should I still rock him until drowsy?

Thanks!

Re: Ferber

  • I have been doing the Ferber method with my 5 and a half month old for about a week and a half now. It has been working very well for everyone in the house. For naps, I abandon the nap if she cries for 30 minutes. At that point she's not gonna get to sleep so I take her out of the crib and bring her downstairs and play with her for a bit. then within the next 45 minutes or so i try again, then she usually goes down without issue. I have only had to abandon 2 naps so far.

For the second question, I give my LO her last bottle in her room in a recliner.  While I feed her, I rock her and talk to her.  Then when she is done eating, I walk her around her room a bit allowing her time to burp.  After a few minutes I lay her in her crib. She is usually drowsy at that point, but not so drowsy that she is practically asleep when she goes in the crib. I used to rock and walk my LO to sleep also so I make sure she is awake but sleepy when she goes in the crib.

    Good luck!!!

  • If you read my question, I didn't ask for your opinion about what I choose to do with my child, but THANK YOU, for making me feel like I'm a terrible mother. It's judgemental, knowitall people like you who make me want to scream. I don't force my opinions on you, so leave me alone.

And I encourage you to read current information on the topic.

To each their own, if it isn't your parenting style, I get that, but there is no evidence that a baby crying for a short period of time does any harm at all.

To answer your question, OP, 30 minutes of crying and we abandon the nap (but have only had to do that one time) and I do rock her a bit and talk quietly to her for a few minutes so she settles down before I put her in the crib.

  • Edited my post above. Also, I did not  force anything on you, or ever state that I knew it all. Those are your own judgements about me.

  • Bottom line, if I wanted opinions, I would've asked for them. However, I didn't. Your phrasing in your initial post came across as very judgemental. I've done my research, read books, and talked to my son's pediatrician at length about it. My point is that I don't appreciate your type, yes I said it, who feel the need to give unsolicited advice to mother's who don't ask for it on any given topic. We are all doing the best we can and you making me feel like my choices are wrong isn't ok, especially when you don't know my situation.

    Well said!
