Babies: 3 - 6 Months

weaning from breast to formula

Hey all!  My little one is just over 3 months.  She does well breast feeding but for a few reasons i need to wean her.  She has taken a few bottles of breast milk but not from me.

Any tips on switching to formula?  What formulas have worked better for you?  I am using the playtex dropins.

TIA

Re: weaning from breast to formula

  • My first was difficult to wean and refused enfamil straight or mixed even with the smallest quantity. Someone told me about gerber good start, and that it supposedly tastes more like breastmilk. I am not sure If that is true, but she took it the first time with out mixing it with any breastmilk.

  • DS is not a picky eater at all. We've thrown 4 different brands at him- Similac, Enfamil, Gerber, and Parent's Choice- and he's eaten them all very well.

  • We use Gerber Good Start.  I read that is has a similar consistency/taste to BM but how would I really kow, I'm not the baby.  I keep powder in the house though we usually use the ready to feed.  It's a little more expensive but in the middle of the night I don't have to worry about mixing, I can just pour and feed.  Vivi never had any issues with Gerber, she's loved it from the start.

I EBFed for the first 4 weeks then over the next month weaned to just formula.  I did have to get someone else to give her the bottle the first few times and once she started taking one from me I could actually go back and forth very easily (I BFed at night until I was ready to completely wean).

I've heard that some women mix BM and formula the first few times, gradually upping the formula to BM ratio until it's all formula.  Also, it might be easier to get your LO used to a bottle consistently before making the formula switch.  Good luck!
