Blended Families

GRRRRRR!!!!!

In January I spoke with SS mother about filling out the financial aid paperwork for college. She said she would do it. Later on I asked SS to make sure she did it and he told me that he had checked with her and she said she did. I find it very hard to believe that she did. She is in the same job as last year yet he did NOT receive the grant that he did last year. The grant was for 18K. Now DH and are gonna have to pony up that much more!!! BM has offered to pay NOTHING. Not even for a freeking text book. So annoying!!!

Re: GRRRRRR!!!!!

  • Can SS take out student loans? I don't generally advise it considering I have 100,000 in student loans and the job market sucks but I also know me and DH will not be financing SD's education. She'll be expected to take some student loans.

  • What Wendi said!  Here, SS said he did it, but did not receive any aid offers.  Suspect, as BM's only income comes from DH, so he qualifies for plenty.  We cannot complete it as we are not custodial.

  • I get what Wendi is saying because they need the parents info that he lived with the most but I actually want to say that this is his responsibility to do and not his Moms. He is an adult and he needs to be in charge of this. Yes he needs her info but there is no reason he should not be on the computer following up. I did my forms every year for for years of college.

I second Jenn - not to mention that if SS could not figure out how to get his BM to - at the very least - provide the appropriate information in time, then it is on HIM to figure out how to find $18k

There is not a single financial advisor out there that recommends that parents take out massive loans for their children's education.

A graduating college student is roughly 24 - the parent of that graduating college student is roughly 50 (though with the current trend of having children later in life, the ages are closer to 55) it is inconceivable that a parent with only 15-20 years until retirement would tax his/her future over the graduate who has 40 years.
