Trimming LOs nails?

DH seems to think we read "everywhere" that we are not supposed to trim our baby's finger nails.  I think the opposite is true; I thought that we were to avoid doing his nails for the first month but that I should be trimming his nails at least once a week (depending how long/fast they grow).

who is right?

  • I've only read that you should try to file them instead of trim for the first few weeks, like you said. After that, I think its fine to trim them.

  • DS2 was born seriously looking like he had a french manicure. His nails were SO LONG, it was nuts. Anyway, they still grow really quickly so we are constantly trimming them or he'd be clawing out his eyes and everyone else's :P

This. In the beginning, I filed his nails. But now I just trim them. Although, I try to do it when he's sleeping, so I don't cut him.

  • I think after the first week or two it is okay -- the reason you don't do it at first is because in some cases the fingernail is attached to the skin, there's no way to get underneath it.  But now it is very obvious that the nail isn't attached, and if I didn't clip his nails, he'd be a wolverine.  I have to do it when he is asleep though, he wiggles too much.

  • I am constantly trimming her nails so that she doesn't scratch herself.  If I don't keep up, I will notice a little scratch on her face.  I had difficulty with the clippers and scissors, so I use the "smooth" side of a nail file.  It files them down and leaves smooth edges.

The filing never worked for us so I've been trimming. Sometimes during those first few weeks, I just bit them off. Do it while LO is asleep though, makes it so much easier.

Same with my dd.  I have to trim her nails all the time and have been since she was born.  She loves to rub her eyes when she is tired and is now all about grabbing people's nose and mouths.  If I didn't trim she would hurt herself of us.
