Re: Freelance writers?

  • I'd love to know more about how you got started. I'm an experienced grant-writer but have only ever been employed by a nonprofit. I'd love to work my way into more and more freelance grant-writing. I'd also love to break into magazine-style writing, but it seems really difficult to get into that without published clips.

i am on mobile and can't bold. For magazine style I recommend contacting local newspapers/peridocials i called every one in my area And got a free lance job. Now my background is journalism so it was a little easier but to be honest their expectations are not super high I was just out of college looking to build my portfolio. You do need to understand the style, which is very different from grant writing. Once you have some clips moving on will be easier. I also have friends that wrote blogs for Aol and the examiner. Both are not money makers but will give you the clips you need to move on.

  • DH is a freelance writer. He got started working for local publications. Now he's a freelance editor for one of them. He does a lot if online content and blogs daily. I think having a daily blog helps.

I am a freelance copywriter and also write for a few national magazines and blogs. Clips are important. It is also a good idea to try writing for publications where you have specific industry expertise that is valued. For instance I used to work for a fitness equipment manufacturer and now I write for a trade magazine aimed at gym owners.

Another place to get published is on bigger name blogs. Check out Demand Media to see if you qualify to write for any of their online content sections. The articles only pay about $30 each, but it's a great way to get published on some big name blogs and there are always assignments so it is something you can do whenever you have time. It's easy to apply online to be a writer for them, as long as you have specific experience in a certain area they have listed.

Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you need anything. I have actually made a pretty good business from writing. Not enough to be the breadwinner, but it's nice income. I also do graphic design and marketing consulting, so that helps too. I've found that corporate copywriting is where the money comes from, magazines are fun, but the pay is a lot less per word even on the higher end.

  • Thanks for all of this feedback! I actually used to write a personal blog that became quite popular at its peak (almost 25,000 hits a month from 10,000 unique visitors) but it became too difficult to keep up with while also working full-time. I've also self-published an e-book that has sold almost 2,000 copies. Not incredible, but it's something.

I thought this would work in my favor, but when I reached out to the editor of a regional parenting magazine, she basically said "we only work with experienced journalists" without even reading my writing samples. That's when I realized I need more clips from reputable sources.
