Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Crib and swaddle question.

Hi ladies a few questions here. We have been transitioning our lo to the crib the past 3 days. It has been rough first night 1.5 hrs. Second night 2.5 hrs. Last night 3.5 hours and a 2 hr stretch. Everytime he wakes real bad we put him in the rnp so we can get sleep.
Well last night he keeps scooting and rotating and hits his head on the crib railing and waking up. Anything I can do to stop this? The crib matress is elevated to help with the transition.
Secondly, our lo keeps getting out of the swaddle for a week now both arms. I don't know at what point he wakes from it as we are sleeping as well. However after a while he cries and is sucking on his hand. Do I invest in a wombie or swaddle pod? Or do I get rid of it all together? He can't roll yet by the way.
Up until a week or so ago he sttn. Now with the transition and swaddle issue he is up every 2 or so hours. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for the lengthy post.

We are finally transitioning to the crib this weekend so I'm not really any help there. I have started making DS take naps in his crib last week and he's done really well. I'm hoping he will do just as well at night.

As for the swaddle, DS has been breaking one or both arms out for over a month now, but anytime I try to put him down without a swaddle, he cries until I wrap him back up. DS can't roll yet either, at least not consistently so I plan to keep the swaddle until that point. I've been thinking about getting a wombie though or something along those lines because I don't think he'll transition well.

I know it's hard now but it will get better. I'll be right there with you in a few days.

  • We went cold turkey into crib and out of swaddle at the same time. The first night SUCKED oh my gosh, it was awful! but every night since then has been great. I did buy her an AA sleep sack, but I don't know how much it actually helped with the transition.

  • First question-No. probably not, especially in the swaddle. My LO did that exact thing when she was swaddled in her crib. I'd always find her face smashed against the crib. We had mesh bumpers which helped soften some of the blow. The elevation probably doesn't help (ours seems to be slightly elevated even without our help)

If he can sleep without the swaddle, I'd give it a try. Since his sleep is crappy anyway I'd just go cold turkey. My fear has was always she was STTN so i didnt want to ruin it. Plus a week of no swaddled naps proved to ME she wasn't ready-she only slept 20-30 min per nap.  If it doesn't improve in 4-5 nights then you know he's not ready to not be swaddled.

We had to stop swaddling my LO due to her rolling in the swaddle from back to belly (she doesn't do it sans swaddle but we think not having her hands in the way helped) a couple times. However, I had gotten the magic sleep suit a month ago in preparation for swaddle weaning, and its worked really well. We just put her in it for night time one night and she STTN like usual.  The next day her naps were actually better (she stopped waking up at the 45 minute arousal period and slept through it) and she still STTN.  So, its working for us. I think it gets her used to her hands being there, but their so heavy she can't do anything about it.

  • Elevating the mattress probably enables the scooting. I would take it out.
