3.5mm nuchal fold and CVS

Hi there I didn't post about my extreme fear when I was told our baby had a large nuchal fold of 3.5mm (99th percentile) but I wanted to post my story so far, because as I was waiting for my results the stories of others who had been through the same thing really helped me to keep my sanity. We have a 10 and a half month old and I had no complications whatsoever with that pregnancy. Dh and I are 31 and 30 respectively. When I went in for my NT scan I did not think I would be told that based on the measurement alone I had a 1/5 chance of having a baby with a chromosomal problem, but that is exactly what happened. Combined with my blood test results, the odds improved to 1/125, but that is still classified as high risk. My hospital recommended I have CVS and I opted to do so. Luckily for me, I am registered at a university hospital which has the best practitioners in the country, so I was confident I was in safe hands. The CVS procedure was uncomfortable but not awful at all. It was the waiting that was the hardest. I had the CVS procedure done on Thursday and just heard this evening that our baby does not have Down's, Edwards or Patau syndrome. We have to wait a further two weeks for a fuller assessment. I'll have an early heart scan in a few days' time. Whilst we are not in the clear, I still feel relieved and happy that so far at least, our baby is ok. I won't feel 'comfortable' until I have him/her in my arms, but today I feel relieved and blessed.

  • I'm thinking of you.  We're going through something very similar right now, so I know too well what you are going through (a cystic hygroma showed up on our NT scan, so our odds are not great).  I imagine you were as stunned as I was, since it sounds like we both had healthy & straightforward first pregnancies...

The waiting is so awful, but it at least sounds like you're taking the advice I'm trying to follow myself, which is to take things one day at a time.

    Keep us updated.

  • Thank you all so much for your support, which I really do appreciate. I will keep you all posted.

Vstevens, I'm so sorry that you have to go through the awful waiting and that they found the c hygroma... I will be thinking of you and hoping for a good outcome. I know what you must be going through. As you said, one day at a time. Xxx

Thanks so much, and right back at you.  Like you, our FISH results were clear, so now we're waiting for the rest of the chromosome / microarray  to come back.  Thank god I have a wonderful OB - she could tell how stressed we were, so ordered another NT scan on Monday, so that we don't have to wait until the 16 week fetal echo to see if (god forbid) things are getting worse, or fingers crossed, better.

If it's any help / consolation, I've spoken with two friends in the past two days who had something similar to your story happen to them (thickened nuchal fold), and both had wonderful & happy outcomes.  I know that is not much comfort when you're waiting for more information, but at least it's something to hold on to.

PM me - I'd love to keep updated with your story...
