HELP from Wisconsin

Hi Ladies.. I'm a WI mommy, and my very closest neighbor friend recently found out that her husband is being transferred to Harrisburg. They bought a house in Mechanicsburg and will be there sometime in September or October. They don't know anyone, and she is pretty sad about leaving her friends and his family here in WI.

I'm trying to cheer her up :) Can you give me your best area recommendations? Restaurants.. Awesome kid stuff to do (she has two girls ages 4 and 2).. Cool festivals.. Just ANYTHING that would make her excited instead of bummed.

I totally appreciate it!

  • This board is pretty dead, but rest assured that there is a lot to do in the Harrisburg area. My favorite is Hershey Park and all the shopping! I live a bit south of H'burg, so I'm not there a ton, but there's always things to do and festivals at the waterfront. :-)

  • One of my favorite restaurants in that area is T.J. Rockwell's.  Also, there are some neat things to explore (for both the girls and parents) on city island in Harrisburg.

  • Wow!  I can totally see why your friend is bummed; you seem like a great friend/neighbor!  I live in Hershey and my sister lives in Mechanicsburg...I would love to put together a packet together for her of area attractions and can mail it to you to give to her.  If you're interested, e-mail me at kafoltz@yahoo.com.

  • I sent you a PM....and, to more directly answer your question......

Mechanicsburg is typical suburbia so we have a lot of the usual chain restaurants and stores, starbucks, several "build your own" frozen yogurt places (check out Bamboo), a few breweries and wineries etc. We have a Wegmans, which should make her feel at home (right? arent they based in the midwest?).

There are a lot of outdoor activities like state parks, kayaking and canoeing areas, bike trails etc. There are many kid centric places like MyGym, Monkey Joes (indoor bounce place), local library events, and tons of local parks--Adam Ricci, Lower Allen and Adventure Park are some really nice local parks (that I know of). Playhouse Cafe is a nice place to check out if shes a SAHM--kids can play while parents eat lunch or have coffee.

As others have mentioned, Hershey has a lot of family friendly activities, including minor league hockey and a childrens garden among other things. There are tons of farms and orchards to do fall festivals and pick your own fruits/vegetables---check out Paulus's.  Pumpkinfest is held the first weekend of October at Adams Ricci park in neighboring Enola and that a really nice family event with craft and food vendors, petting zoo, pony rides, etc.

Macaroni Kids online lists family activities and there are a few Meetup.com groups for young families. The Giant (grocery store with a community room) in Camp Hill does a saturday get together for working moms.

Also, the school districts in Mechanicsburg (Mechancisburg or Cumberland Valley) are arguably the best districts in the central pa area so when her kids are ready for school, I dont think she'll be disappointed.

Good luck. Moving is hard, and Im sure there will be some culture shock living among yankees, but we'll go easy on her ;P
