August 2012 Moms

Tacky alert!

My mom just called saying she got a shower invite to my dad's cousins wedding shower. He's a lot younger than my dad, closer to my age. Anywho, it says they are registered at www.honeyfund.com. I said, "mom, they want everyone to pay for their honeymoon!" So tacky.

They also put a stove and fridge on the registry. And..... I don't even know if my mom is invited to the wedding ceremony because they said it was only going to be 20 people.

I told her to buy them an etiquette book. Am I right?!?

  • Tacky tacky tacky! How do they actually have the nerve to ask for that?

What really boils my blood is that this is the same cousin who had a Facebook fight with DH and pretty much called us white trash because we lived in a single wide trailer. Said DH wasn't a man because he hadn't bought me a house like I deserved. Ugh.

I'd take a honeymoon in Italy too, if someone else were to pay for it!

  • Oh, lord. I feel like I'm on the effing knot again.

We did a honeymoon registry in addition to a traditional registry. Those who chose to use it loved it.

Now the fridge and whatnot...that's tacky.
  • TACKY!!!!

  • My roommate from my first job did a honeymoon registry... She said they didn't need anything else!  We bought them a dinner in Athens.  I think they had a nice time in Greece.  (...And are now divorced.)

I don't mind the honeymoon registry thing at all.

There is a really good chance the appliances are just to get the discount coupons.  Our friends are registered for a bunch of power tools (band saw, table saw, etc.) at Sears.  I don't think he's expecting them to be purchased - I think he wants the discount!

If I truly didn't need anything then I wouldn't expect gifts. If I wanted to pay for someone's grand trip, I'd pay for my own. Maybe I'm wrong here but I just think its tacky. Wedding showers IMO are to help the couple get started not to spoil them with a lavish vacation.

  • I'd actually never heard of the honeymoon thing, but to each their own. As for the fridge that's lavish, but I agree discounts can be great for registry items not purchased.

There's people that put x-box & surround sound, etc on their registries. This is no different. Every family, circle of friends, area of the country is different in what is accepted so do what's right for you and your group.

  • I had a honeyfund.com registry and a registry at Crate and Barrel.  My honeyfund registry was cleared out while none of my china was purchased, not one plate cup or bowl.  Obviously my guests didn't think it was tacky!

  • I think it is also in bad taste to invite people to a shower that won't be invited to the wedding, that is clearly just asking for gifts.
  • depends on where you live, but sometimes that website is not for the honeymoon.

my sister used that site for people to do money instead of brining checks to the wedding since she and her hubby were older and didn't need the "usual" things when combining households. they didn't register for gifts as they didn't need anything. but out here sometimes people just give gift cards/checks rather than give gifts.

I agree with this. I think the honeymoon registry is a great idea, especially for couples who already live together! They have things and need to get something.

I think the stove and fridge is tacky, plus not inviting to the wedding but to the shower is tackiest!!!!!

  • I'm sorry ladies, asking people to fund your lavish honeymoon is tacky no matter what the excuse.

FWIW, we paid for the actual honeymoon ourselves (flight and all inclusive resort) we "registered" for experiences and excursions.  Honestly, I wish, ore people would have bought me china...it was cheaper, too!
